Walter Jerry Dean Bowling

Walter Jerry Dean Bowling, 90, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on August 15, 2026. He was born on August 20, 1935. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Walter will be remembered with enduring affection by those who knew him.

Walter’s story began in Arkansas, where his father was a strawberry farmer. From an early age, he showed a determined spirit and a readiness to take on responsibility—driving the farm truck at just seven years old. As a teenager, that same independent streak carried him beyond the farm, as he would sneak out and head into town, already drawn to the wider world and the life waiting beyond familiar roads.

In Phoenix, Walter built a long and steady career as the owner of Walt's TV and repair shop, serving the community from the early 1960s through the early 1990s. Through his work, he formed many friendships, including connections through hospitals and the Sheriff’s department. He also took pride in the stories he told—often with a sense of satisfaction—about meeting well known celebrities along the way.

Walter married his wife, Nelda Joy Bowling (Ratliff), in Florence, AZ, in 1954. Their marriage spanned 68 years, marked by loyalty and devotion. Together they raised a family of six children: Susan Felty (born 1961, passed 2018), Jerry Bowling (born 1963), Pamela Bowling (born 1966, passed 1968), Kathy McCarthy (born 1970), who is married to Jack McCarthy, and Steve and Scott Bowling (born 1974). Walter was also blessed with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had, in total, seven sisters and two brothers, and is survived by four sisters: Juanita Ussery, Anna Ogelsby, Linda Halterman, and Glenda Bowling.

Walter found enjoyment in the everyday pursuits that made life feel full. He went to car auctions to purchase and repair cars for resale, and he loved going to the casino. He valued time away on family trips, and just as much, the simple comfort of visiting family members for coffee and cookies. Old country western music was a favorite, often providing the soundtrack to his days. And for those closest to him, one small detail will always bring him immediately to mind: He really enjoyed jingling extra change in his pocket..

Walter also gave his time as a volunteer in the campaign for senator John McCain, and he would proudly speak of the relationship he had with senator McCain and his wife.
