

Walter John "Jack" Schmid 90, of Payson was welcomed into Heaven on July 7, 2013. Jack was born in Phoenix on January 22, 1923 and made Arizona his home for 90 years. He was retired from the Bricklayer's Union Local 3 and received lifetime membership in the union with more than 50 years of service. Jack was a true craftsman, building 3 homes for his personal use, the first here in Phoenix, a cabin at Forest Lakes and his last home in Payson at the age of 73 laying every block himself. He was an avid hunter and fisherman which took him from one end of the state to the other over the years. He was most proud of his service to our country in the US Navy during WWII on the oiler USS Kaskaskia. Jack loved to garden, growing citrus, fruit and nut trees as well as vegetables. Each year he provided his family plenty of fresh fruit, canned fruit, juices and jams.. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years Frances, son Larry Schmid, daughters Patty George and Nancy Schmid (Allen), his beloved Lab Molly Dog, 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, sisters Frana Irwin and Hilda Brock and was uncle to several nieces and nephews. Visitation and Services will be at St. Luke's Catholic Church, 19644 N 7th Ave., Phoenix, AZ on July 18th. Visitation is from 10:30-11:30 a.m. with mass at 11:30 a.m. His final resting place will be at the National Veterans Cemetery. Please send flowers to Phoenix Memorial Park & Mortuary, 200 W.
