

William was predeceased by his father Louis, mother Hazel, sisters Anna, Hazel, Hilda, brother Henry, wife Donalda, and daughter Cheryl Bennett. He is survived by his five children Mark, Kevin, James, Timothy, and Anne, his foster son Steven Schneider, his eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
William was born on June 17, 1927, and was raised in the greater Orange County area of New York.
At the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served on the USS Amsterdam for three years and he was present at the time of the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay during World War II.
William met his wife Donalda Packard in Highland Falls, New York, and they were married in October 1951. Together with their children, the Potter family lived in several locations throughout the country to include Highland Falls, New York; Newburgh, New York; Prescott, Arizona; Newport News, Virginia; Chestertown, New York; and Phoenix Arizona. William worked at several educational institutions to include 30 years at West Point Military Academy and later at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
Throughout his years, William enjoyed participating in and watching all types of sports. He was a devout member of Camelback Bible Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona.
A funeral service for William will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2023 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Shadow Mountain Mortuary, 2350 East Greenway Road, Phoenix, AZ 85022. Following the funeral service will be a graveside service from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N Cave Creek Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85024.
