Alvin Richard Henderson, age 93, went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 18th, 2018. Mr. Henderson is survived by his wife, Bonnie, three children: Arthur Henderson (wife, Lynn) Beth Bagwell (husband, Tony) and Carol Wade (husband, Tim).
He is predeceased by his brother, Arthur Henderson, and he has a sister, Ann Parker. He also leaves behind six grandchildren: Liza Fleischer, Brian Rauschenbach, Justin Dougherty, Candice Carlton, Victor Wade, and Chloe Henderson. He also leaves behind 10 great grandchildren.
Mr. Henderson was a Paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment during WWII where he made multiple jumps. He was captured in Holland while helping a fellow soldier who had been shot. He was a Prisoner of War for 9 months. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, POW medal, and the Presidential Citation. At the end of WWII he returned home and earned his economics and accounting degree from Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania. He married the love of his life, Bonnie Manning, in 1952. They have lived in Pickens, SC since 1954. They have been lifetime members of Pickens Presbyterian Church.
Visitation services will be held this Saturday, June 23rd, at Dillard Memorial Funeral Home 5:00-7:00 pm. Memorial service will be Sunday, June 24th, at 2:00 at Pickens Presbyterian Church. Full military honors will be provided by the Honor Guard from Fort Jackson and the Honor Guard from Shaw Air Force Base immediately following the service.
The College of the Ozarks honors veterans through the Patriot Education program. They sponsored several of Mr. Henderson’s trips to historical European WWII sites.
