Barbara Lee Baumgarner Looper, our Mom, of Pickens, clasped hands with her blessed Savior, Jesus Christ on May 20, 2019, joining her husband and our Daddy, Pat, who had gone before her by a mere 58 days. She was 83 years old.
She is survived by her children, Patti Davis (Reese), Doug (Donna), Jimmy (Tammy), Rob (Lisa) and Amish Ray (Manisha). Barbara poured herself into her 16 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, and was excited about getting to know her first two great, great grandchildren. Her sister, Loris Baumgarner Crocker, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Dillard’s Funeral Home 2402 Gentry Memorial Highway in Pickens, with a family visitation at 11:00 am and funeral service at 12:00 p.m. Reverend Rob Looper will preside.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Six Mile Baptist Church, 149 N Main St, Six Mile, SC 29682.
Mom was born in Seneca to the late K.D. and Ethelyn Williams Baumgarner and graduated from Six Mile High School in 1953. That same year she and Daddy were married. Barely in her 20s, Mom traveled by herself by steamer with youngsters Doug and Lynn (Patti) to everyone outside the siblings) in tow to join Daddy in his deployment in Japan and Okinawa respectively from 1957-60; during their time in Okinawa, Jimmy was born. After returning to the States, where Daddy was stationed at Sewart AFB in Smyrna, TN, for 10 years, Rob (Robby to most in Pickens) was born. In 1972 the family settled back in rural Pickens County, where Mom lived for the remainder of her life.

Mom was an accomplished homemaker and gardener, with such a green thumb she was likely able to make petrified wood bloom. Her vast knowledge came from her love of books and she was well-read in many areas. She particularly enjoyed spy and historical novels. Most of all she loved the Word of God, poring over it with devotion and eager expectation in the promises of God for his people.
If ever there was a Proverbs 31 woman it was Barbara Looper—hard-working, life-loving, generous, and beautiful in all that she did. Her family was blessed beyond measure by her talents, humor and compassion. To say she will be missed is an immense understatement—nothing on this earth will ever fill the hole of her loss.
Humanly speaking, there is no doubt that her children, grandchildren and great-grand children love Jesus because she loved Jesus—a testimony to the faithful covenant promise of God to be her God and her children’s God. It is for this reason—that Jesus is who he says he is and did what he said he would do for his people in his death and resurrection—that we, her family, rejoice in the sure promise that she lives and we will love and laugh with her again.
