Sheriff Stone was born on September 7, 1937, in Pickens County. He was the son of the late Chief Charles Wesley Stone and Ethel Williams Stone. Sheriff Stone graduated from Pickens High School in the year 1957. He was proud to be a Blue Flame and was inducted into the Pickens High School Athletics Hall of Fame. After graduation, he joined the United States Army in 1959 and was stationed in Europe before his honorable discharge in 1961. He attended Tri-County Technical College, earning an associate degree in Criminal Justice and was also a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
C. David Stone was elected Sheriff of Pickens County in 1969, and served Pickens County for 44 years. He was recognized by the State of South Carolina as Sheriff of the year in 1976, 1990, and 2012. He was past president of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers' Association and South Carolina Sheriffs' Association. During his career he received the SLED Distinguished Associate Commendation, the American Legion Outstanding Law Enforcement Award, the Strom Thurmond Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement and the Order of the Palmetto. Sheriff Stone was inducted into the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers' Hall of Fame for his meritorious service in 2019. Sheriff Stone was a member of the Pickens Masonic Lodge and a Shriner. He was a volunteer firefighter for the Pickens Fire Department for 35 years and a faithful member of Pickens First Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Donna Lawrence Stone; two daughters, Lindsey Eich and her husband Jay, Susan Chapman and her husband Brent; one sister, Rosa Lee Baker; three brothers, Harold Stone (Shirley), Coy Stone (Claudine), and Roy Stone (Shirley); four grandchildren, Sophie Eich, Stone Eich, Henry Chapman and Sally Kate Chapman. Sheriff Stone was preceded in death by his first wife, Bertha Woodward Stone, their infant daughter and one sister, Ann Stone Gravely.

Graveside Services will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Monday, December 21st, 2020 at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The service will be open to the public for those who wish to attend in person. Due to the current COVID-19 Pandemic, masks are required to attend and social distancing will be observed.
Former officers that served under Sheriff Stone and full time and volunteer Pickens firefighters will be recognized as honorary pallbearers.
A first responder “procession of honor” will escort Sheriff Stone to Hillcrest Memorial Park for the committal service. Active law enforcement and firefighters who wish to participate in the procession are invited to assemble at Pickens High School parking lot at 1:15 PM on Monday. The graveside service for Sheriff Stone will be Facebook live under the Dillard Funeral Home Facebook page.
