George Edward Garrett

George Edward Garrett, 89, a lifelong resident of Pickens County, South Carolina, passed away on August 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Affectionately known to many as “Doc” or “Porge,” George will be remembered for the warmth, friendship, and familiar presence he shared with those who knew him.

Born June 1, 1937, in Pickens County, George was the son of the late Ernest and Edith Garrett. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Edwina Garrett Crane. George graduated from Pickens High School in 1955.

George lived a life grounded in faith, family, hard work, and devotion to those he loved. He proudly served his country as a member of the National Guard, an experience that reflected the sense of duty and commitment he carried throughout his life.

He was married to the love of his life, Georgia Chappell Garrett, for more than 68 years. They met as young coworkers at Sangamo Electric, where a friendship grew into a marriage that spanned nearly seven decades - filled with love, family, and shared memories.

George worked most of his career at Sangamo Electric, where he was a dedicated and hardworking employee. His time there held special meaning, as it was also where he met Georgia. Together, they maintained their connection to the company for 50 years.

George was a lifelong member of Grace United Methodist Church, where his faith guided his life and service. Over the years, he served his church in many roles and demonstrated his beliefs through his actions and his care for others.

George also knew how to enjoy life. Over the years, he enjoyed golf, bowling, and playing softball, and he was always happy to settle in and watch his Clemson Tigers and the Atlanta Braves. These simple pleasures brought him happiness and created many wonderful memories with family and friends.

Above all, George was a family man. He was a devoted husband, loving father and father-in-law, and a proud grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. His greatest joy was the family he and Georgia built together.

He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 68 years, Georgia Chappell Garrett; his son, Greg Garrett and his wife, Dana; and his daughter, Julie Garrett Nelson and her husband, Manning. He was a proud grandfather to Shelli, Shaina, Jennifer and her husband, Levi, Samuel and his wife, Emma, and Wesley and his fiancée, Tabitha. George was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, each of whom held a special place in

his heart.

After 89 years, George leaves behind a life defined not simply by the years he lived, but by the people he loved and the lives he touched. He leaves a family who knew his devotion, a church that knew his service, and generations who will carry his memory forward.

He will be remembered for his steady presence, his devotion to Georgia, his love for his family, his faith, and the everyday moments that became lasting memories.

George’s life was a blessing to all who knew him, and his legacy will live on through the family he so deeply cherished.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made in George’s honor to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or Prisma Health Hospice of the Foothills, in appreciation for the compassionate care and support provided to George and his family.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 20, 2026, in the Chapel of Dillard Funeral Home, located at 2402 Gentry Memorial Hwy. Pickens, SC 29671.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9:45 to 10:45 AM in the Garden Room.

Burial will follow the service at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
