On April 16, 2015, Harold (Harry) Lee Smith, 76, the loving husband of Mary Ann Smith, went home to be with his Heavenly Father after an extended illness. From Spartanburg County, SC, Harry was the son of the late Fred Lee Smith and Edith Delph Smith. After graduating from high school in 1956, Harry joined the Air Force which set him on his path for a lifelong passion and talent in the electronics field. He worked for ITT in Maryland after leaving the military, and from there he went on to many years of self-employment with Radio Shack as an owner of retail stores in North and South Carolina. In 1997, after his 25 years as a successful store owner, he and his wife retired to the lovely foothills of Pickens County, SC where his love of nature blossomed. He enjoyed backyard birding and vegetable gardening. He also enjoyed his daily workouts with friends at the YMCA. Harry is already being missed by so many people whose lives he touched, not the least of which are his past employees who learned more about business from him than in any college course. He treated them like family with his style of tough love that was still always fair. His intelligence, business sense, and sharp wit are traits that will be discussed by those who loved him, for years to come. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of nearly 24 years, Mary Ann, his daughter, Linda (Jim) Colip, of Roanoke, VA, his son, Jeffrey Smith, of Little River, SC, a step-daughter, Jennifer Ewan, of Asheville, NC, and two grandsons, Grant Colip and Weston Colip. Harry was preceded in death by a son, Gerald (Jerry) Smith, of Florence, SC. He is also survived by four sisters and a brother: Lois Smith Hammett, of Spartanburg, SC, Marj Smith Brown, of Mooresville, NC, Bettie Smith Ramsey, of Gastonia, NC, Merle Smith Seay, of Inman, SC, and Don (Barbara) Smith, of Cowpens, SC. On April 20th, 2015, a celebration of Harry’s life will take place at Grace United Methodist Church, where he was a member (309 East Cedar Rock Street, Pickens, SC, 29671). The family will receive friends in the church parlor from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., with the service beginning at 3 p.m. Memorial donations in his name can be sent to the church. Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens, SC is assisting the Smith Family. A message of condolence may be expressed to the family by visiting www.DillardFunerals.com
