Pickens, SC – Hertha Elizabeth Hufnagel Bellino passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on December 4, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer and heart disease. She defied the odds in sickness and health with courage and dignity. Hertha is predeceased by the love of her life Vincent in 2013 along with her parents Otto and Auguste (Gaul) Hufnagel, her grandson Brian Lytle and great granddaughters Jayla Capers and Hannah Thorton, and her siblings Arthur, Theresa, Otti and Gregory.
She was a loving wife, to her husband Vincent of 67 years whom she met in Germany in 1946. She married Vincent on November 3, 1946 and immigrated to the United States in 1947 under the War Bride Program. Hertha fulfilled her dream by becoming an American citizen in November 1951. She was a proud American and would let you know what it meant to be a citizen of the United States. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Hertha was always there for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren to provide advice and guidance on life, history (World War II and Nazi Occupation) and especially gardening. She routinely reminded us of her achieving a degree from Agriculture College in Bayern, Germany. Above all else she treasured her time spent with her family. Being an avid reader, she became fluent in several languages as well as a skilled accordionist and accomplished organist playing up to a week ago. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, baking, cooking and telling stories of years gone by.
Hertha is survived by her 6 children: Maria Schlesier (John), Barbara Bellino, Vincent (Jeannie), Diana Schumm (David), Joseph (Sharon) and Julia Bellino, 24 Grandchildren, 41 Great-Grandchildren and 12.5 Great-Great-Grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Agape Care Group-Hospice and Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
