Known to those who loved him as Jamie, he was born to Erma and Martin Chapin McKenzie on July 13, 1954 and grew up in the Calhoun community of Clemson. He completed Pickens Vocational School in 1972 and spent time working at Camp Hope, Clemson University Botanical Gardens, and Pickens County Disabilities and Special Needs Better Skills program.
Jamie loved being in nature and lived many years with his brother John and family on their farm in Pickens. He enjoyed chopping wood, knowledge about the weather, and visiting with the farm’s many cats and dogs. Jamie was an avid movie and television fan, and regularly quoted lines from John Wayne, James Bond and Walker, Texas Ranger.
Jamie is survived by his brothers Dr. William A. Leitner, Jr. Birmingham (Dena), Martin C. McKenzie Jr., Columbia (Deborah), and John W. McKenzie (Linda) and nieces and nephews: Leigh Thompson (Charlie), William A. Leitner, III (Nicole), Anne McKenzie, Laura McKenzie, John W. McKenzie, Jr. (Gabby), and Colyn Terrapin (Brett).
Receiving of friends and family will begin at 1pm, on January 20th, 2024 at Grace United Methodist Church, 309 E Cedar Rock St, Pickens, SC 29671. Funeral service will be led by Pastor Valerie Mireb, beginning at 2pm. Graveside interment will follow at Old Stone Church Cemetery, 101 Stone Circle, Clemson, SC 29631. All are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of James McKenzie.
