Easley – The Reverend Joseph Walter “Joe” Hinton, 97, husband of the late Lula Vaughn Hinton, went home to be with his Lord and Saviour on Thursday morning April 5, 2018.

Reverend Hinton was born in Greenville County son of the late Franklin Vernon and Ethel Brown Hinton. He was retired as a Southern Baptist Minister with his wife of 69 years Lula, faithfully serving alongside him. In his early years of ministry Reverend Hinton served churches in Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. He moved with his family to Pickens to pastor East Pickens Baptist Church for six years and retired as Director of Missions of Screven Baptist Association in Summerville, SC.

Following his retirement, he served as interim pastor of Northside Baptist Church in Pickens, Boone’s Creek Baptist Church in Oconee County, and Welcome Baptist Church in Greenville.

Reverend Hinton was a graduate of Dacusville High School, North Greenville College (now North Greenville University), Stetson University and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He was a World War II veteran serving in the US Army Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant and gunnery instructor.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Dan Hinton and wife Sandra of Pickens and a daughter, Diane Easley and her husband Wallace of Ocean Springs, MS. Also surviving are four grandsons, Mitch Easley and wife Aimee, Derek Easley and wife Krissa, Zach Hinton and wife Sarah, Sean Hinton and wife Brandi, seven great grandsons and one great granddaughter. He is also survived by a brother Frank Hinton.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother Homer Hinton and his second wife, Dorothy Lovell Hinton.

The family will receive friends Saturday April 7, 2018 at Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens from 9:30 to 10:45 AM with funeral services following in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Rev Hinton was the sweetest man! I am a member of Northside Baptist Church and he was our interim. He and his wife were such a blessing to us. He was a true teacher.
