Pickens, South Carolina
Lois Griggs, 83, passed peacefully from this world and into the arms of her husband Dave on Saturday, January 24, 2015. They are still dancing!
Born in New Jersey to Herbert Henenger Hagerty and Violet May Elwood Hagerty, she grew up in River Edge, New Jersey. Childhood summers were spent on a Pennsylvania farm with her Aunt Alice, Uncle John and cousin Glenn. She embraced most of her farmhouse chores….except for the chickens!
After graduating from Hackensack High School where she was a cheerleader, she attended Averett College in Danville, Virginia, earning an associate degree in secretarial science. She met her husband Dave at Dartmouth Winter Carnival in the early 1950’s, and loved telling her daughters it was love at first sight.
They married and had three children, Sandee, Suzi and Lynda and moved to Pickens in 1960 to raise their family. Between chasing toddlers through mud puddles and wiping peanut butter off door handles, she found time to volunteer at the old Cannon Hospital, meals on wheels, the blood mobile, and the community food bank. She also loved attending and hosting bridge parties for several bridge clubs.
In 1971 she fulfilled her lifelong dream to become a nurse and worked as an LPN at Laurel Hill Nursing Center in the early 1970’s. Lois and Dave eagerly embraced their retirement years traveling, enjoying old friends and making new ones. She often remarked that her Pickens friends were the best she could have ever imagined.
She also will be missed by grandchildren Gwynn, Tyler and Lindsay, great-grandchildren Hailey, Addisyn, Brookelynn and Kason. She also leaves behind her beloved dogs Jody and Lexie.
Visitation will be Monday January 26, 2015 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at Dillard Funeral Home with memorial service to follow at 7:30pm in the chapel.
If you would like to honor Lois’s legacy of love and laughter, donations can be made to Foothills Humane Society, 500 Five Forks Road, Liberty, SC.
