Mr. Mark G. Savitsky
September 7, 1949 – May 8, 2020
Mark Savitsky, aged 69, of Six Mile, SC, passed away on May 8th, 2020. He was born to the late George and Ludmilla Savitsky, faculty members at Clemson University. Mark was born in the Philippines, at a UN refugee camp during the Communist takeover of China. He is preceded in death by his sister Olga, an artist and minister. He is survived by his brother, Basil, who resides in Durham, NC, and by his three nieces. Basil’s fondest memories include the time that the two spent eating Asian noodles and playing strategy board games, such as chess, Gettysburg, and Stratego. Mark graduated from Clemson University with a BS in Physics with a 4.0 grade-point average (straight As). He served as an ensign in the US Navy until the onset of schizophrenia at age 24. His illness led his family to help start one of the first SC chapters of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Mark made his home during the last 21 years at the Six Mile Retirement Center, where he was deeply cared for and supported.
He was much loved by all of the staff and his housemates and is being remembered for his “perfect” humor and kindness.
Mark will make his final resting place at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens, South Carolina with private family services. Online condolences may be sent to www.dillardfumerals.com
