She is survived by her devoted husband, Eddie Hughes; her loving son, Josh Hughes, and his wife, Meredith Hughes; her grandson, Rhett Hughes, with whom she shared an especially deep bond, and her grandson, JT Scott; her sister, Angie Owens; and her mother, Avanell Cater Galloway. She was preceded in death by her father, D.C. Willis, and by her infant daughter, Ashley Leigh, who now welcomes her in Heaven.
Wanda introduced her mother to her second husband, Donald “Bill” Galloway, who held a special place in Wanda’s heart as her stepfather.
Wanda retired from the Greenville News and treasured the many friendships she made there. She remained closely connected with her former colleagues, even continuing their tradition of playing the lottery together.
Wanda also took great pride in being a baseball mom. From Josh’s first days in T-ball through his college career, she was his biggest supporter in the stands. Legion baseball, in particular, held a special place in her heart, and she never missed a chance to cheer him on.
Wanda was full of life, with a spirit that shone brightly in every room she entered. You never had to wonder what was on her mind, as she spoke with honesty and a spirit that made her unforgettable. Her deepest joys were found in the love she poured into her son, Josh, and her grandson, Rhett, who held a special place in her heart.
A chapel service will be held on Friday, August 29, at Dillard Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 11:00 a.m., followed by a service at 12:00 p.m., with burial immediately after at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Foothills Retirement Community, Therapy Department. Wanda was deeply grateful for the friendships she made during her time there, and the family takes comfort in knowing this gift will continue to support the care of others.
She will be dearly missed — her opinions, her love for Christmas, and her unmatched ability to light up a room will never be forgotten.
