

Bill Hughes Central, SC William Leander “Bill” Hughes, 80, of Windy Hill Road, husband of the late Martha Hendricks “Cricket” Hughes, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at his home. Born in Pickens County, he was the son of the late Isaac and Willie Roper Hughes. Mr. Hughes was retired from the US Air Force after 20 years of service. Following retirement, he was a Real Estate agent, taught at Tri-County Technical College and most recently was the President of the Oconee County Home Builders Association. Mr. Hughes served as a UN Peacekeeper in the Belgian Congo, flew into hurricanes to track dangerous storms, and spent many years in air force intelligence. More recently, he volunteered with the Alzheimer’s Association. Surviving is a son, William Brian Hughes (Ellen) of Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren, Lydia and Gretchen Hughes. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a son, Bruce Wayne Hughes and a brother, John Hughes. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Pickens with entombment following in the mausoleum of Hillcrest Memorial Park, with full military honors. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM at the funeral home.
