Andrew W. Gurcak

September 15, 1946October 2, 2020

Andy passed away on October 2, 2020 of complications from esophageal cancer. He was born on September 15, 1946 in Pittsburgh to Andrew and Stella (Jackowski) Gurcak. He was married to Dr. Elaine Lees for 44 years before her death in 2017.

He is survived by his daughter, Jessica (Robert) Sedgewick, and grandchildren Henry, Peter and Rose. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen (Richard) Vater, and nephews Michael and Kevin. He would also like to thank Eileen Narvin for her companionship and care. Andy held degrees from MIT (SB, mathematics/literature), the Univ. of Virginia (MA, English) and the Univ. of Pittsburgh (MBA). He worked from 1968 until 1985 at Westinghouse Nuclear Energy Systems as a software and hardware manager.

In 1985, he began work as an engineering manager at Goodyear Aerospace (later Lockheed Martin) in the Simulation and Training Department, which built full combat system simulators for military fighter aircraft. In the course of his career there, he held positions of R&D manager, engineering department manager and chief engineer.

After their retirements in 2010, Elaine and Andy were able to indulge in their two favorite pastimes: visiting with their beloved grandchildren as they progressed from infancy through childhood, and spending time and making improvements at their vacation home in the Finger Lakes of upstate New York. Additionally, Andy took up writing science-fiction short stories, some of which were published in several anthologies.

The family would like to thank Good Samaritan Hospice House of Wexford for their caring treatment during Andy’s final illness. In lieu of flowers, please send donations there or to Women’s Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh.

To Andyś family,
My parents (Ed and Mary Bartek) were good friends of Andy. They would always have so much fun at their reunions. My father passed almost three years ago now, and I wrote Andy an email about a year ago to express how sad we all were that he was battling cancer. He wrote me the nicest email and shared awesome memories of my parents when they were young. My siblings and I laughed and cried over his email. It was so thoughtful of him to take the time to write such a sweet email. We treasured what he wrote and we are so sad that he has passed. We are so sorry to his family and friends. Rest in Peace.

Always thought of Andy as being one of my best buddies in High School. We worked at McGinnis Market together during our Junior and Senior years. I'll cherish the memories of our walks to the Whitehall theater and back where we talked about the future and what we were going to do. I'll miss you my friend, Rest in Peace.

I will always remember Andy as one of the most positive people I have ever met
When you spoke to him he would listen and never interrupt until you were finished
When my husband passed in 2014 and I came to our class reunion alone he was the first to ask me how I was doing .
He was a friend to everyone in school and at our reunions.
Most of all I will miss the twinkle in his eyes and his smile
Rest In Peace dear Andy our class of 64 will dearly miss you.

My deepest sympathy to all of Andy's family. You will all be in my prayers and thoughts. I will never forget all of the many times we would all be together at class reunions and picnics and the laughs we would all have together about each of us. Andy was always the corner stone of our class and will always remain in all of our hearts for the great and generous individual he was.
