Every year, as a new school year approaches, I pick up immunization paperwork from Northland Pediatric. During this brief visit I learned of the passing of Dr.Kilpela. I was overcome with sadness and disbelief. We were extremely fortunate to have him as our family pediatrician to our three children. He is fondly remembered as an excellent doctor and even better man. With each visit, I reflect on the quality of his approach and his manner with each of my children. In particular was his almost daily visits with our youngest son at the old Children's Hospital during his week long stay. As we know it is difficult time when our kids do not feel well. I remember feeling hopeful after each of his visits. I feel gratitude toward Dr. Kilpela and am confident that he has touched many lives in addition to ours.

I was shocked today to learn of the passing of Dr. Don Kilpela, a father, husband and pediatrician of the highest caliber. He took splendid care of my children, and I got to know Lorraine, Don, and their children as their ophthalmologist. I observed Kyra, Jason, and Brian through the years as they matured and achieved so much academically and professionally. I secretly hoped that my own children would be so well mannered and accomplished later in their lives. What a tribute to their parents! Don's sense of humor and his love for Lorraine were so obvious with each encounter. I will miss him, but understand that his legacy will carry on with the work and lives of his children and grandchildren. Unfortunately, he left us way too early.

With deepest respect

I was so sad to hear about Dr. Kipela's passing. He always called my daughter "monkey" as I'm sure he did to all the kids. My deepest sympathy to the family. He will be very missed. God Bless!

As a pediatrician, Don was the most important kind of physician. He healed children, and children are the future. Don's life was a life well-lived and that is the highest achievement one can hope for in this world. My condolences to Lorraine, his family and his friends.

I am a former classmate, MHS Class of 1966.

Dear Lorraine and Family:

How sad I was to learn about the passing of another classmate. While it has been many years since we all attended Monessen High School, I fondly remember Don as a quiet, very bright and personable gentleman, who was most certainly suited to his chosen profession. From the comments provided by former patients and their families, it appears that he was an excellent physician, which doesn't surprise me. His legacy is significant, but he will be sorely missed.

With deepest sympathy.

Our hearts are saddened by the news of Dr. Kilpela's passing. My last memory of Dr. Kilpela was his wonderful bedside manner with my 15 year old daughter that had some thinning hair issues. Dr. Kilpela responded to my daughter's concerns with "Yeah, I know what it's like to have "thinning" hair. How would you like to trade places with me". He definitely lightened my daughter's mood and has always been great with all of my children. For over 16 years Dr. Kilpela has helped with keeping my children healthy & happy. We will sincerely miss him. May God bless the Kilpela family with peace & take loving care of you during this difficult time. With deepest sympathy, Victoria Hall & children, Mariah Schlegel, Benjamin Schlegel & Caleb Hall

We are so sorry to hear about Dr. Kilpela. Our children and I always enjoyed talking with him at their appointments. He would always tell our kids that "you are growing like weeds". We will always remember that line. We will miss him very, very much. We hope your memories will help you to get through this difficult time.
