

Donald Edward Ross, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on June 18, 2014 in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife, Kitty of Mt. Lebanon, daughter Susan Ross of Lowell, Massachusetts, daughter Peggy Thompson and her husband Carl of Moon, Pennsylvania, and their sons and daughter-in-laws Ben & Rebecca Thompson of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, and Bryan and Mary Thompson of Moon. He has two great-grandsons William and Jacob. Don also leaves niece Carol Gwara and nephews David Ross, Dan Ross & Herb Brown. He is preceded in death by his parents Dr. Edward and Laura Ross, and his brother Kenneth.
Don was born in Rochester, New York. He graduated from Irondequoit High School then served in the Army at the end of WWII. He graduated from the University of Rochester with a B.S. and as a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity, and Springfield College with a M.S. in Mathematics. Don taught briefly at the Taft and Allendale Schools, and then for over 25 years at Irondequoit High School in suburban Rochester. At IHS, he coached basketball and mentored the math league. Don loved being a teacher. He retired in 1982 as the head of the school’s Math Department. While living in Rochester, Don was active at Lake Avenue Baptist Church. Don and Kitty spent summers in Ogunquit and Moody ME. When they retired, they lived full time in Moody, Maine before moving to Venice, Florida. During his 30 plus year retirement, Don played a lot of tennis, volunteered for over 15 years in Meals on Wheels, rooted for the Red Sox, organized Christmas drives for needy families and enjoyed living near the sea with Kitty. Two years ago, Don and Kitty moved to the Pittsburgh area to be close to family.
Don’s words to live by: Eat dessert first.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church in Pittsburgh. Interment will occur at the Pittsford (New York) Cemetery.
