John was born on May 9, 1944 in New Kensington, PA to John Baptiste Bastin and Marie (Felentzer) Bastin. He received an undergraduate degree from Saint Vincent College, a Masters degree in history from Duquesne, and an MBA from Kent State University. He worked in pharmaceutical sales most of his life. On December 31, 1966, he married Bernice Eileen Kapalka and they raised two daughters, Suzanne and Nicole.
John was an avid reader of history, the daily news, and business/financial journals. He also enjoyed poetry. He truly loved to learn. John was a football fan as well and enjoyed weekend football games rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the University of Notre Dame, West Virginia University, and Virginia Tech. He was known for his quick wit, storytelling, and kind nature. He was always there to lend an ear or give his opinion - whether it was solicited or not. No one was a stranger to him as he made people feel at ease.
John was preceded in death by his father, John, his mother, Marie, and his sister, Beverly Farneth. He is survived by his wife, Bernice; his daughter, Suzanne (Greg) Shanower, grandchildren Benjamin and Marisa; and his daughter, Nicole (Kevin) Bocock, and grandchildren Elizabeth and Zachary.
A Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at 12:00 PM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish - St. Teresa of Avila church, 800 Avila Court, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.
