John L. Hyde of McCandless, PA passed peacefully on August 10, 2022. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Viola F. Hyde. He leaves behind three daughters, Leslie Firth of Philipsburg, PA; Karen Hyde-Kelley of Port Allegany, PA; and Barbara Hyde of Pittsburgh, PA; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
John was a smart, sarcastic, and witty man who lived a long, full life. He spent his later years traveling and cycling the world but always returned to the city that he loved, Pittsburgh. He could more often than not be found reading a mystery or true crime novel or watching episodes of Seinfeld on repeat.
He wasn’t a fan of most people and would often say he loved and trusted dogs more than humans. I don’t remember a time visiting him that we weren’t walking a dog, talking about a dog, or admiring a photo of one of his dogs. My personal favorite was a photo of his beloved St. Bernards in birthday hats.
John wasn’t big on funerals. As Jerry Seinfeld would say “According to most studies, peoples number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two? Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you’re better off in the casket than doing the eulogy”
Per his wishes there will be no service. We ask instead, if you would like a way to honor him, you go adopt a dog from a local shelter or volunteer your time there making friends with the hounds.
He will be greatly missed.
I’ll sign this off with how he ended every phone call. I love you, keep smiling.
