Katharina Erika Schumacher passed away on January 23, 2026. She was born April 23,1940 in Sanpetru German, Romania to Jacob Zettelmayer and Anna Sebold. As a toddler she was brought to Wolfsburg, Germany where her father worked in a factory during the war. Her mother took her and her brother back to Romania, leading to a 15 year separation from her father. Under Soviet Order 7161 her mother was transported to Ukraine for five years while she was raised by her grandparents, Michael Sebold and Susanna Hollerbach, in Romania. After the war, her father was able to arrange for his wife and children to join him in Pittsburgh in 1959. Katie graduated from Saint Peter’s High School the next year.
Katie married the late Harold Schumacher on August 27, 1966. She attended night school at the University of Pittsburgh, receiving a BS degree in 1980. She earned a Masters at La Roche College and became a CPA, working at PDM Steel and the Buhl Foundation. She and Harold traveled locally and to Germany as members of the Teutonia Mannerchor. Katie’s greatest joy was her family. In 2014 Katie and Harold moved to Purcellville, Virginia to be closer to their grandchildren.
Katie was a breast cancer survivor, but succumbed to dementia. She is survived by daughters Linda Schumacher-Feero (Greg) and Diane Cates (Ben), grandchildren Merline Feero, Ainsley, Gabriel, Jordan and Noelle Cates, brother Joseph Zettelmayer (Rosella), nephew Erik Zettelmayer (Lisa), niece Rita McConnell (Bryan) and their daughters. We will miss her hysterical spoonerisms as well as her skill with dobosh torte, nussstrudel, blechinka and plum dumplings.
A funeral service will take place at St. Ursula Church on Kirk Avenue in Allison Park on February 27th at 10 AM. Burial will be at Christ Our Redeemer Cemetery with a repast to follow. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
