Myron “Mike” Mordecai passed peacefully at his residence, Sherwood Oaks Retirement Village, on November 24, 2013, following a brief illness. Mike was born on February 7, 1929 to Adolph and Diane (Spiro) Mordecai. He attended Central High School in Philadelphia and received a BS in psychology from Temple University. After serving in the US Army and deployment to Japan and Korea, Mike enlisted in the US Army reserves and completed a second BS in Engineering at Penn State. Mike worked as an engineer at Westinghouse where he enjoyed a long and distinguished career, including collaboration with Westinghouse Japan on cutting edge technology and management techniques. His family included two children, Diane and Leonard.
Mike was an intellectual and a great friend. He had a wide range of interests and his room was filled with books on philosophy, religion, chess, music theory, languages, history, and computer science. He loved all things mechanical and had multiple hobbies and talents. He could play any instrument he picked up and was an amateur ham radio operator. He was an organizer and a leader as well as a very popular resident of Sherwood Oaks where he arranged musical evenings and served as president of the residents’ association. A skilled photographer, Mike won a photography contest with a striking night time view of the Pittsburgh skyline, which was made into a wall mural and displayed at Westinghouse. Mike enjoyed travel and visited many countries. Most of all, it will be remembered that Mike loved good food and never missed an opportunity to share a meal with friends.
Mike was a beloved member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the North Hills, having previously been a member of the First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh. A memorial service at UUCNH will be held. Please private message Carla Baldwin on Facebook for more information.
