I'm very sad to hear Sunder passed away, but I am grateful that I got to meet him at a young age - when I met Niki in 1st grade. I remember the 3 of us playing Street Fighter and hearing Sunder scream "Chinese Sign!!" in one of the levels, haha. It brings a smile to my face just thinking about it. Sunder tried to help me find my first job after graduating college, I'm sure he was busy but he made time to help me and I always appreciated that support. I hadn't seen Sunder and Premila in several years and they visited Chicago in 2018, it was so nice to catch up and especially for them to meet my daughters. He always had a passion for life and brightened up the room, I know we will all cherish that. The thing he said just about every time I saw him was "Why are you enjoying life?" It was funny and it was the best.

I am so sad to hear about Sunder's passing.  The only condolence that I can take is that I don't know of anyone who took as much joy in life as Sunder.  He approached each day, each task, each challenge with unbounded energy and enthusiasm.  It did not make any difference whether the topic was work, music, getting new technology, watching football, animating pictures or his family, his enthusiasm was infectious. On top of that, he was a very good friend and supporter of our family, and someone that I very much admired.  I would like to thank his family for posting pictures that brought back some great memories.  We will all miss him very much, but he brought a lot of joy into our lives.

The ever smiling Sunder Raman was an avid photographer who curated his photos into albums and memory videos and generously shared them. 
One of his first reunions of our IIT Madras 1973 batch he attended in recent times was the one in Mahabaleshwar and the next was at Pattaya both of which I organised and hence came very close to him.  After the Mahabaleshwar ReU he visited my home and had a video of the event set up to show in double quick time. He was like that, ever smiling, ever proactive, and a self starter. No one asked him to do so but for every event he had a video set up and would share it spontaneously. 
When Sushama & I visited DC a few years ago in 2019 we stayed with Sunder and Premila for a couple of days, and Premila would drive us around Washington DC while Sunder showed us the highlights and took photos to boot. Premila in the absence of a parking space would hang around in the car and sometimes drive around the block and pick us up for the next stop. So sweet of her. At the end of our visit, promptly, I got his curated video of the "Thakars in Washington DC".  A wonderful couple.  We carry everlasting memories of our stay with you.  How can anyone forget Sunder's most infectious smile.

I was so sorry to hear this news. The last time we talked he was as energetic and enthusiastic as ever - and that's always the way I will remember him. There were so many times I'd say to myself "wow, I hope at some point I find something I enjoy as much as he seems to enjoy this!" I can still vividly remember times at the house in the McLean 100 either watching DC football or some tennis tournament and the part that made them memorable was not the game/match but Sundar's passion and engagement. He could make any conversation interesting and fun - even when those same conversations would have been mundane with anyone else. It always seemed like he began from a place of seeing the best or most exciting version of things in anyone or any topic. I always admired that and will miss it. 

Our family has shared a wonderful friendship with the entire Raman family for 35 years.  Sunder made a big impact on each of us and he will be sorely missed.  He was especially kind to all three of our children and very interested in what they were doing and what they were thinking.  He encouraged them in all their pursuits in school, in athletics, in life.  When I think of Sunder, the first image that pops into my mind is his incredible enthusiasm!  It is no exaggeration to say that he greeted each day, each friend, his family, his work, and each new technology with gusto and a passion for possibilities.  It is hard to think of a world without him.  He will be missed, but, he leaves an incredible legacy.  I will smile every time I think of him and I know we will share great stories with Premila, Shilpa, and Niki.

Hi. It is indeed sad to know that Sunder is no more.  He was person full of life.   My memory of Sunder goes back to 1967:  when he visited us during his summary vacation.  He was in his final year school.  My very first interaction with him:  it was clear that he had fire in his belly and was ambitious.  He then did his Btech from IIT Madras: one of the most premium Engg colleges.  He was first from our family to study in  IIT.   What i use to admire about him was at that young age his priority in life  was  very clear.  There is lot i learnt from him:  some of his attributes did rub off on me too.
Unfortunately I could meet him for over last 40 years.  Met Pramila in 2018 :in Pune when we met during Sai's funeral.   Pramila is certainly looked the perfect match for Sunder.  May his soul rest in peach Mohan:  


I was very saddened to learn of Sunder’s passing away. Sunder played a pivotal role in my career.
My first interaction with Sunder was in 2002/2003. Subsequently he hired me as his direct report. That career move allowed me to expand my quantitative horizons and work with some of the smartest and talented individuals including Sunder himself.     Sunder the perennial optimist believed in me and I will be grateful for that opportunity.  Sunder valued education and was very proud of his alma mater the IITs. He exemplified the best of two cultures. My heartfelt condolences to the family. 

From Sep 1999 to Oct 2006, Sunder was my direct boss, mentor, counselor and friend. During those 8 years we disagreed and agreed with each other a few times in a day. And every time I learnt something that I had not known, thought about or experienced. We never discussed work as it is, it was always about how we could change the industry, the company, the team for the better. I realized how valuable this experience   was after I quit his team in 2006. But I came up with a solution - every time a critical decision came for me - I would ask myself what would Sunder do. For me Sunder (in Bengali - Beautiful) will never be gone, he will be with me forever.

We had the privilege of meeting initially in New Orleans  and later enjoying the hospitality of  Premila and Sundar in Virginia in 2019 through Shalini and Kumar, our long time friends.  
Besides his zest and enthusiasm  for life and all that it had to offer, we were both struck by his profound knowledge about Football.
Besides his favorite Washington Commanders(then Redskins), his devotion and following of New Orleans and its famous football team "The Saints"with Quarterback "Drew Brees" was amazing and not only it percolated to general information but also in-depth strategy and maneuverings of any football team in USA. 
Over years we would ardently share info, follow our football teams and exchange information, as I learnt more from him.
As  we have noted in several posts in this Obituary, he was a firm believer in hard work, enterprise and the American Dream. 
He had enthusiasm for musical creativity also as I realized he  sang and created and recorded songs also.
Life fully lived and accomplished in his own terms. We will miss you and rest in peace- Sundar.

Very very sad to hear about Sunder passing away.
His energy and happy warrior state was contagious.  
He was a firm believer in America and the American way.  He and I shared this belief and we texted back and forth on political matters.  We also shared a belief in conservative policies.
What I remember especially is that he never lost his enthusiasm and faith - that things would turn out right. 
His biggest regret was that he could not win some people over to his way of thinking.
I do not recall his college days as we circulated in different circles.  However this did not stop Sunder from calling and visiting.
He wanted very much for me to visit him in DC and play tennis.
It is my loss that I never could do this.
I know he is in a happy place, spreading love and joy and working on another bucket list to fulfill.

Was so sorry to hear the news of Sunder’s passing!
I, too, worked at Ally and supported Sunder and his team!  I laugh when Anna indicated that she enjoyed coffee with Sunder!  Reminds me of one of my favorite memories!  Sunder was always traveling back and forth from VA,  NC and Fort Washington!  When he arrived, he always asked me to get him a double espresso and I always denied him that and said he had enough energy without that boost!

Our beloved Athimber ( Sunder Raman) passed away peacefully on 19th April, surrounded by his loved ones.
Athimber lived life to the fullest, He never shied away from a challenge. His zest for life was infectious, and he inspired everyone around him to embrace every moment.
Throughout his career, He established himself as a leader and innovator, His hard work and dedication earned him numerous accolades and he was highly respected by his colleagues and peers.
Athimber, was a devoted husband to his wife Premila and a proud father to his children Shilpa & Nikhil, he leaves behind a rich legacy for his grandchildren. 
He loved to travel & explore new places, & capture each moment, to create beautiful videos with apt background music. 
His love for tennis & singing became a passion where he excelled.

The last couple of years, he had some medical challenges, but he always approached them with courage and determination. His positive attitude and unshakable faith were an inspiration to all who knew him.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and kindness, you'll be missed Athimber 






Sunder was my undergraduate class mate about 50 years ago. Lost touch with him all these years and happened to meet him only last year. He was so enthusiastic, full of life and energy. He had accomplished everything others can only dream about.  But he was humble enough to always think about others and help in any way he can. Above all,  he leaves behind a wonderful and loving family.  

May his soul rest in peace.  My sincere condolences to the family.

Sunder was unstoppable. I started working for him in the depths of the global financial crisis - he was absolutely unflappable - he built a team and inspired us with his vision, expertise and sheer energy. And he was so proud of his family. It was an honor to work with him.

Sunder was a shining light. He hired me to be on his leadership team and remained a mentor long after. We shared a love for coffee, finance and travel. He was instrumental in shaping my career. He was so proud of his family, and enjoyed sharing photos of his grand kids who were about the same age as my son.   He was brilliant, kind and generous.   Rest in peace Sunder. 

Every one of us who had a chance to work with you and had you as a mentor is a better person today because of you. I will miss you deeply.  Rest in peace.
