Susan Jean Podlogar

Susan Jean Podlogar, also known as Jean, died on August 27, 2026, at the age of 92. Born November 17, 1933, Jean’s life was marked by resilience, steady devotion to others, and a thoughtful presence that made her deeply cherished by family and all who knew her. Jean was a resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Jean was born on a farm in Henderson Township in Central Pennsylvania, the eighth of ten children. From an early age, she loved animals—especially her horse, Cindy—and took pride in the work of the family farm, carrying forward a capable spirit and compassionate heart that would guide her throughout her life. She graduated from Big Run High School and went on to complete her Nursing Degree at Shadyside School of Nursing. As a Registered Nurse at Shadyside Hospital, Jean brought care and attentiveness to her work, and it was there that she met her husband, Earl Schuster.

After her time at Shadyside Hospital, Jean served as a secretary at Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Penn Hills, and later returned to nursing as a Registered Nurse at Passavant Hospital in the North Hills. She then worked at Vincentian Home, where her devoted service and compassionate professionalism remained evident until her retirement in 2000.

Jean and Earl were married on September 17, 1956, at St Stephens in Hazelwood, and they raised their five children in Penn Hills. Earl died in 1976. Jean later remarried; her husband John Podlogar preceded her in death in 2017. Through every season of life, Jean remained a beloved and steady center for her family—thoughtful in word and deed, and unwavering in her care for those around her.

Jean is survived by her children Barbara Lex (Karl), Len Schuster (Joni), Bev Franze (Steve), Becky Meehan (Matt), and Roberta Dorfman (Elliot); by 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, with one great-grandchild on the way; and by her brother Calvin Pifer and her sister Vivian Venturino. Along with her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents Russell and Virginia Pifer; her siblings Hayes, Ione, and Ruth; as well as four siblings who died at a young age.

Jean found joy in the everyday rituals that bring people together. She loved gardening, crocheting, needle point, playing cards, and all kinds of games and puzzles—pastimes that reflected her thoughtful nature and her delight in shared time. She was also an avid Steelers and Pirates fan. Her remarkable gift for remembering dates and special occasions was a lasting expression of her devotion, especially within her large family, where she made others feel remembered and valued.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at Cumberland Crossing Manor and for the many friendships Jean was blessed to have there. In addition, gratitude to the staff at Hope Hospice. Jean will be remembered fondly for her enduring compassion and devoted love, and will remain a lasting part of all who were fortunate to share in her life.

Family and friends will be received on Monday August 31st at H.P. Brandt Funeral Home 1032 Perry Highway Pittsburgh PA 15327 from 2-4 and 6-8. A Funeral service will be held on Tuesday September 1st 10 AM at Christ Church at Grove Farm 249 Duff Rd Sewickley PA 15143
