Age 90, of Laurel Gardens, PA, passed away peacefully at his home on June 20, 2025.
Walter was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 48 years, Nancy (Doyle) Heron and his sister June Wilson (George). He is survived by his children: James Heron (Sherry Edwards), Diane Walton (Mike), and Dale Heron (Mari Grace Lingenfelter); and by his cherished grandchildren: Asher Heron, Christopher Heron, Julia Walton, Hope Walton, Rachel Walton (Arjun Natarajan), Mia Heron, Abigail Heron, Brooke Heron, Kadiya Lingenfelter, and Hayden Lingenfelter, and great-grandchildren, Sterling, Eleanor and James Natarajan.
Walt proudly served in the U.S. Army as a recoilless rifleman, and spent 33 years as a traffic clerk at Jones & Laughlin Steel Company, where he helped direct the flow of iron and steel along Pittsburgh’s three rivers and railways. He also helped countless elderly over the years by servicing their yards, running errands and driving them to appointments - he was a giver and a doer.
A devoted family man, Walt found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid gardener whose yard was so beautifully kept it resembled a park and some may say it rivaled Phipps Conservatory which he loved to visit. He had a deep love for animals, a passion for music, and a fondness for dancing—especially the polka with his dear Nancy “Sunshine". He was a very active member of Faith Lutheran church, serving in many capacities over his lifetime – church council, greeter, opener of doors and ringer of church bells.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 26, from 1:00–3:00 PM and 5:00–7:00 PM at H.P. Brandt Funeral Home 1032 Perry Highway Pittsburgh, PA 15237. A funeral service will take place on Friday, June 27 at 10:00 a.m., Faith Lutheran Church in Laurel Gardens 161 Sixth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15229
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Animal Friends, in honor of Walt’s lifelong love of animals.
