Don Young passed away Jan. 13, 2021 in Placerville, Calif., at the age of 95 ½. He was born on July 10, 1925 in Placerville to parents George “Bert” and Doris (Horn) Young and to grandparents John and Maude (Hulbert) Horn and George and Anna (Rymal) Young.
Don grew up in Placerville and attended El Dorado High School where he played basketball. After high school, during World War II, he joined the Navy and served from Nov. 1943 - May 1946. He was an Electrician’s Mate 2c stationed at the US S/M Base, Midway Islands and was on the USS Yorktown (CV10).
After the war Don returned to Placerville where he met Elizabeth “Irene” Shepherd who ultimately became his wife and they raised two children. He worked for Pacific Gas and Electric for 36 years. Don enjoyed spending time in the mountains. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting and camping. His favorite pastime was horseback riding. Don and his wife Irene lived on a ranch in Pleasant Valley for more than 30 years. Together they raised, showed and trained Appaloosa horses and gave riding lessons. They organized summer trail rides and camping trips for many years.
Don was preceded in death by Irene Young his wife of 64 years in 2012. He is survived by son Dale Young and wife Ruth, of El Dorado; daughter Linda Tooch Von Emmerik and husband Rod, of Fairfield; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family.
