04/04/1922-03/15/2012
Betty Shinkle died peacefully at home last Thursday, March 15, 2011. Betty is survived by two children, Robert "Bud" Shinkle of Placerville, Christine Negm of Birch Bay WA, and Dr. Fayek Negm of Riverside, CA. Betty has two grandchildren, Jeremy Shinkle and Clinton Calfee. She also leaves behind our chosen family, Gary & Marlene Joses of Mountain Ranch, CA.
Bud Shinkle and son Jeremy were Betty's primary caregivers these last nine years. The Shinkles thank those who assisted with Betty's care: Cindy Shinkle, Mary Lou McCasslin, and Jennifer Cain.
Betty was born April 4, 1922 in Beverly Place, Berkeley, CA. They lived next door to the Martin family. Betty and Charlotte (Martin), now 90, have remained friends since 1922, as have succeeding generations of both families.
Bulbar Polio struck Betty in 1926 at the age of 4; she was paralyzed from the neck down. Betty spent a year in an iron lung. She needed many procedures to make her whole.
Ultimately Betty regained full use of her upper body and went on to have an active life. She met Bob Shinkle when they were children. They attended San Bernardino High School and fell in love.
Betty was a pre-law student at UC Berkeley when the war broke. Bob went off to war for 4 years. Betty started work at Edwards Air Force base as an administrative assistant.
Bob returned home early in November, 1945. The couple were married November 17, 1945 and moved to west Los Angeles while Bob went to UCLA on the GI Bill. In spite of Betty's physical challenges, it did not stop her from having two children.
Betty enjoyed family and work, and especially enjoyed her 10 year career at the Federated Church as Administrative Assistant. She loved to spend time at Piney Ridge Ranch with the family.
Private services were held for the family. No other services are planned. The family requests any remembrances be sent to Snowline Hospice of El Dorado County, 180 Industrial Drive, Placerville, CA 95667.
