Joan (Joanie) Helaine Poggio (Hoeborn), native of Oakland and resident of both Pleasanton and Pollock Pines, passed away peacefully on the morning of April 6, 2011, after a four year battle with cancer. Her family surrounded her in her final days on hospice care. She is preceded in death by her Father, John Hoeborn and Mother, Elsie Hoeborn (Bertucelli). A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Joanie is survived by her husband of 47 years, Larry Poggio, son Rick Poggio, daughter Keri Lundin, daughter-in-law Carrie Poggio and son-in-law Joe Lundin; grandchildren Kendal, Ember, Seth, Reese, Cameron and Shelby. Joanie is also survived by her sister Ann Hoeborn and brothers John and Ted Hoeborn, and many nieces and nephews.
While growing up in Oakland, Joanie attended Maxwell Park grammar school, Frick Jr. High, and Fremont High, where she graduated in 1961. She was a conscientious and excellent student, who garnered many awards in citizenship and spelling. Her favorite childhood memories were of family summer vacations at Siegler’s Springs resort in Lake County.
Fresh out of high school, Joanie began working at the General Motors plant in Oakland in 1962 and soon met Larry, her future husband and the love of her life. They married in August, 1963 and within a few years had two beautiful children and a happy life as they settled into their Pleasanton home. Over the years Joanie lived her life as a caring, selfless, generous and compassionate human being. She was a wonderful mother and wife. She loved and cared for animals, was a great cook and had excellent artistic talent. She once dreamed of being an illustrator for Disney.
With Larry by her side, Joanie loved many trips to Lake Tahoe to play slot machines; treasured three Alaska cruises; and had fun times at many classic car shows. She enjoyed towing “Momz Bag” (a matching trailer) behind “Popz Rod”, a pristine red ’32 Ford Coupe, and loved the reaction of people who admired the cute matching pair on the road.
Since 2000, Joanie enjoyed splitting time between her beloved Pleasanton home and a mountain retreat in Pollock Pines. In both homes, she found happiness gardening, feeding animals, and keeping a clean and tidy home. Her fruit trees in the back yard in Pleasanton and the many squirrels and birds she fed there were a source of joy for her.
Tragically, cancer cut her life much too short, and this wonderful, sweet-hearted lady who was loved so much will be immensely missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations in Joanie’s name be directed to the SPCA (www.spca.org) or any other animal-related charity. An online memorial book can be accessed to leave condolences at: www.chapelofthepinesfunerals.com. Private family services are planned. Arrangements entrusted to Chapel of the Pines Funeral Home, Placerville, CA
