

Joseph V. Flynn passed away on April 20, 2016. He was born in Georgetown on September 20, 1917. He graduated from El Dorado County High School in 1934. Flynn’s long career with the U.S. Forest Service began at the age of 14 working as a warehouseman and firefighter. In 1941, World War II interrupted Flynn’s college forestry plans. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps, earning his wings and serving as a flight instructor before deployment to Europe. Flynn flew missions carrying paratroopers to support the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. He continued to transport supplies to ground troops including major engagements in Bastogne. Flynn returned to the United States after victory in Europe. He returned to complete his degree of Science Forestry at Oregon State College. He served on five National Forests. Flynn served as Supervisor of the El Dorado National Forest from 1960-1962 and completed his career at the Regional Office in San Francisco. After retirement he returned to El Dorado County where he continued in public service on the Planning Commission and later elected and served two terms as County Supervisor District 4 (1979-1987). Flynn was an active member on many civic and historical associations, veteran’s organization, and public policy advisory groups that served El Dorado County and the forest industries.
Joseph Flynn is survived by his wife Pamela Masters Flynn, his brother William E. Flynn, and his six children: Laurence P. Flynn, Mary Flynn Lory, Alyson L. Flynn, J. Michael Flynn, Carol E. Flynn, and Patricia Flynn Hunt. Also surviving are 11 Grandchildren, 12 Great-grandchildren, and one Great-great-grandchild. He was predeceased by parents Alice Nattrass Flynn and Laurence V. Flynn, three brothers: Thomas C. Flynn, John L. Flynn, and Robert E. Flynn and wives: Ellen Morey Flynn and Halmar Moser Flynn.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 29, 2016, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 3109 Sacramento St., Placerville beginning with a Rosary at 10:30 am followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:00 am. Interment with Military Honors will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Placerville.
