The first day of sophomore biology class at Ernest W. Seaholm High School, Mrs. Cooch informed us that her classwork was going to be at the collegiate level.  She wasn't kidding. It was the hardest class I've ever taken, including college. Her husband, George Cooch, was my French teacher. She called Mr. Cooch "the conscience of the staff." Mr. and Mrs. Cooch were two of the four best teachers in my entire educational career.  Saying goodbye before graduation in 1979, Mrs. Cooch requested that we NOT visit. She said she and Mr. Cooch knew they were our best teachers. They appreciated and were aware that in the future we would want to thank them. That's not bragging. They worked to become exceptional. Even today, in 2025, I often think of Mrs. Cooch when I am outdoors because of her appreciation for all living entities. I remember bits and pieces of biology still. She made what she called an "inspirational switch" of lab partners, matching me with Dave, whom she helped with dyslexia before anyone recognized it as a learning disability. Dave went from being told he was "dumb" with zero self-esteem to passing Cooch's class, a major accomplishment for all of her students. Mr. and Mrs. Cooch changed many, many lives in the best of all possible ways. Thank you both. Writing "you both are loved," would make them cringe and grimace. Mrs. Cooch would say I was a "spitty little urchin." But they already know it is true. Why else would so many students want to visit after graduation?

My life has been so enriched by knowing Mrs. Cooch. She was my homeroom teacher at Ernest W.Seaholm High School in Birmingham, Michigan. May your soul rest in peace, and may our heavenly Father's light shine upon you.
