Meg lived in Georgetown since 1963, after moving from Southern California with her husband Howard, and two young children, Karen and Kenny. She later welcomed her third child, Amy, in 1966.
Meg was born in Los Angeles where she was raised by her mother and father, Mary Beth and Rider Myers with her sister Mary Ri. The family moved to the Coachella Valley where her grandfather founded the California date industry by bringing the first date trees from Arabia to be grown commercially in this country. The name of the town was changed to “Mecca”, where her family farmed and ran the general store. Her fondest memories included her horse Babe, cranking her model T before driving across the desert, helping her father run the store, and being a cheerleader for the football team, the “Fighting Arabs”, as they were known then, at Coachella High School.
The family moved to Pasadena where Meg attended South Pasadena High School. She soon met Howard while attending summer camp in Idyllwild, California. While in the army, Howard wrote to Meg daily until he returned and married her in March of 1956. During the next few years she gave birth to both Karen and Kenny before graduating with a BA from Whittier College. The family would take long summer vacations camping in Northern California, in search of a better life. Ultimately, finding Georgetown and being hired by Paul Mello to teach at Georgetown Elementary. Meg and Howard immersed themselves in Georgetown life while raising a family, being devoted teachers and a 55 year member of the Georgetown Methodist Church.
Meg taught at Georgetown and Northside Elementary Schools until retiring in 1993. Thirty years of touching and inspiring students' lives in the classroom, producing school plays, coaching volleyball, softball, Tommy Tumblers and other athletics, teaching cooking, and volunteering her time to improve the lives of children and their families in any way she could.
Meg’s top priority was always her family, who returned that endless love and respect.
Meg is survived by her husband of 62 years, Howard, her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and David Wikler of Henderson, Nevada, son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Karen Hiemke of Vacaville, and daughter and son-in-law Amy and Frank McBryde of Antelope. Meg is also survived by 6 adoring grandchildren, Christopher George, Margaret George Jennie Rae Hiemke, Ryder Sutton, Beth Sutton and Kendal Hiemke, who all live in Meg’s heart and mind endlessly.
A memorial bench will be installed in the Georgetown nature area this coming spring or summer. To memorialize Meg, please read to your children, sing them a song, and come visit her memorial overlooking the beauty of the nature area. In lieu of flowers, Meg and family would request donations be made to the Georgetown Youth Fund to support music and youth scholarships and music programs for Georgetown Elementary students (C/O El Dorado Community Foundation. P.O. Box 1388 - 312 Main Street. Suite 201. CA ID 68-0014752 a. 530-622-5621) Placerville 95667).
She would also like everyone that she knows to keep Howard busy, love him, and appreciate his continuous devotion to her, and life in Georgetown.
Services for Meg are planned for Sunday, December 23 at 2pm at the Georgetown Methodist Church, with celebration of life immediately following at the Georgetown Community Center, 6329 Lower Main St., Georgetown.
