Miep and Harry were married in 1962, in Broekhuizen, Netherlands. They moved to California where they lived for 40 years raising their 4 children. They were very active in Our Lady of Refuge Church and running Marriage Encounter for many years. After moving to Placerville in 2011, they became involved in St. Patrick’s church. Miep volunteered in the Clothes Closet, worked in the Upper Room with meals for the homeless, helped with the Golden Age by going to local convalescence homes to deliver Communion, singing in the choir…..just about everything she could do to help.
Harry and Miep loved traveling to visit friends and family—especially the grandkids. Miep was adventuresome—zip-lining at age 84? Absolutely! She was competitive and loved games; she was on 2 bridge teams and was a fierce Bingo player.
Miep would collect leftover cookies from all the events she went to and put them in baggies to leave in her car. These she would hand out to the homeless or anyone needing assistance. She would say “I don’t have money to give, but who doesn’t like cookies?” Miep never considered anyone a stranger—just a friend she hadn’t met yet.
Miep was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Verkuyl. She is survived by her children, Tonny Verkuyl, Annette Young, Kathy Sota and Harry Verkuyl, and 11 grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 3109 Sacramento St., Placerville, CA, with Recitation of the Rosary at 10:30 a.m. Friends are invited to sign the online guestbook and leave condolences or favorite memories at chapelofthepinesfunerals.com.
