Mike's childhood can be described as content, filled with riding horses, playing in creeks, and enjoying home-cooked meals prepared by his mother. He and his four younger siblings were always gathered around the table for these hearty meals. As the oldest, Mike's primary chore was often taking out the garbage.

Mike did not enjoy school, despite being quite accomplished in it. He excelled in his studies and pursued a career in horticulture, eventually working as a botanist for the El dorado National Forest. Before going to Chico State University, he joined the Marines and served during the Vietnam War in DaNang.

In 2005, Mike married his wife, Dee, in Sedona, Arizona, becoming a stepfather to her children: Summer, Melody, and Elijah. Mike and Dee bonded over their love of the outdoors, spending ample time hiking, running, and backpacking together. They even chose to have

their wedding in Coconino National Park in Sedona, hiking to their chosen spot near Coffee Pot Rock, a well-known landmark in Arizona.

Mike took immense pride in his horticulture work particularly in eradicating weeds and other harmful plants in El dorado National Forest. He also valued his effort in educating others about plant life and the beauty of nature. Having learned the importance of hard work from his parents, Mike felt a sense of accomplishment in his endeavors.
