Robert Stanley Wirth, born August 3, 1925, passed away at his home early Thursday morning on April 25, 2018, after a bravely fought battle with cancer. He was 91 years old. Bob was born in Manilla, Philippine Islands, where his father was stationed in the Army.
After Bob graduated from Sequoia High School in Redwood City, California in 1944, he enlisted with the US Army Infantry. After basic training at Beale, he joined the United States Army Medical Corps, and at the end of WWII, he was honorably discharged. After his time with the military, he obtained a two year degree at College of San Mateo. Robert was the kind of person that could never have too much knowledge and decided to go back to school to expand his degree at Canada College in Redwood City. Bob even went further, and this time he went to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA, where he learned the Farrier trade, more commonly known as shoeing horses.
In 1970, Bob started working for Lenkert Electric Company in San Carlos as an inspector of Naval Material until October of 1983 when he left to go work for Lockheed Missiles and Space Company, Inc. as an Industrial Safety Engineer, with a Top Secret clearance.
In 1950, Bob and Patricia Christensen married and in 1984 they bought a home and moved to Placerville to retire. Since Bob always had to keep busy with something, he volunteered for twenty years as a docent at Coloma State Park, as a Blacksmith and even volunteered for five more years in the blacksmith shop at Gold Bug Mine Park in Placerville. Not only was Bob known for his excellent iron work, he was also a skilled wood-worker.
Bob was a dedicated and beloved member of the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in Placerville. He served in a variety of positions including Eucharistic minister, usher, and a lay reader, as well as serving on a variety of committees. Because Bob was good with his creations, he helped to complete the church's wooden altar, the lectern, and even built the wooden cross which still stands atop the steeple on the historic church on Coloma Street.
He is survived by his son, Kevin Wirth, and his children; daughter, Wendy (Tony) Ratto, and their two children, Sean and Brian Gomez.
Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia.
His memorial service will be held at the Church of Our Saviour on May 18, 2018, at 11:00 am and he will be interred in the columbarium at his church.
Bob will be missed by his family and many friends, all of whom agree that he was a kind and hardworking man who generously donated his time and talents to others.
