She was born on February 5, 1935 to parents James Leon Godwin and Rachel Mildred Greene Godwin in Phenix City, Alabama. She was raised in Columbus, Georgia and graduated from Baker High School in 1953. She then attended Truett McConnell Junior College.
On June 12, 1955, Betty married James Austin Voss, with whom she shared 70 wonderful years of marriage. The couple first met in high school, where they began a courtship that blossomed over four years before uniting in marriage. Throughout their life together, they moved to several cities across the country for James’s career, Hawaii being her favorite. Betty embraced each new chapter with grace and resilience. During these years, they raised three children Ken, Ricky, and Debbie building a warm and loving home wherever life took them.
Betty was a gifted artist who loved bringing ordinary objects to life, especially through her beautifully painted glassware, ornaments and other hand-crafted pieces. Many of her creations found their way into local shops, where they were cherished by her family as well as others. She found joy in singing in the church choir, gathering with loved ones, and indulging in a good shopping trip. Some of her happiest moments were spent at her lake house, where she graciously hosted family and friends. Known for her impeccable taste, she took pride in setting a table with the most beautiful dishes and place settings. Above all, she was a classy, God-fearing woman whose gentle spirit and love for others shone through in everything she did.
Betty is survived by her husband of 70 years, James "Jim" Austin Voss; and their children: Ken James Voss and his wife Dixie; Ricky Austin Voss and his wife Leslie; and Debbie Voss Ward and her husband Tony. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Amanda Voss Tellez (married to Christian Tellez), Dr. Amy Voss, Dr. Elliott Voss (married to Dr. Melanie Voss), Daniel Voss (and his partner Bree Schroeder), Taylor Ward (married to Haley Ward), and Landen Ward (married to Jasmine Ward). She leaves behind great-grandchildren: Julian Tellez, Chloe Tellez and Vivian Voss.
Additional surviving family members include her sister-in-law Shirley Voss Campbell and her husband Larry Campbell, along with their sons, Curt Campbell (married to Deborah) and Don Campbell (married to Heather).
Betty will be remembered for her grace, creativity, deep love for her family, and her unwavering faith. Her presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved her.
