Elma Maria Esquivel, 69, of Plano, Texas, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2023. She was born on November 15, 1953, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to the late Ambrosio & Juvencia (Alvarez) Contreras. Elma was one of five children, and enjoyed being a part of a large family. As a child, she loved to jump rope and could often be found helping to care for her younger siblings. In school, Elma enjoyed and excelled at math and was a 1972 graduate of Roy Miller High School in Corpus Christi.
Following high school, Elma enjoyed working in the retail sector. Upon moving with family to Allen, Texas in 1979, Elma began her career at Texas Instruments and eventually went on to work as a Special Education Teacher’s Assistant at Armstrong Middle School until her retirement in 2018.
Elma enjoyed the simple joys in life. She loved doing arts and crafts, solving sudoku puzzles, and seasonal decorating. She had a weak spot for watching telenovelas. Elma was devoted to the Catholic faith and was a member of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church in Plano for many years. Being rooted deep in her faith, Elma exemplified God’s love in all she did. The love and care she poured on others was admirable. She was supportive, encouraging, and optimistic, always ready to give her advice but was a wonderful listener, too. Although she was strong and independent, Elma showed patience and grace in all she did. More than anything, family was Elma’s greatest accomplishment and joy. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Elma doted on her grandchildren and enjoyed attending their soccer games, school activities, and simply spending time with them. She will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.
In addition to her parents, Elma was preceded in death by her brother, Ambrosio Contreras, Jr.; sister, Maria Alaniz; and niece, Bernadette Alaniz. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her beloved husband of 27 years, Fernando Esquivel; daughter and son-in-law, Cassandra & Domingo Hernández of Plano; grandchildren, Jaime, Aarón, and Isabel; sister, Herlinda Contreras of Forney; brother and sister-in-law, Jose & Denise Contreras of Plano; longtime friend, Anne Beaver of Plano; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 2, 2023 from 2:00-6:00pm in Ted Dickey Funeral Home, 2128 18th St., Plano, TX 75074 with a rosary service beginning at 4:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 3, 2023 at 10:00 am in St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1201 Alma Drive, Plano, TX 75074, with burial to follow in Plano Mutual Cemetery.
