Jeanne Huelsen passed away peacefully of natural causes on the afternoon of March 7, 2016, Jeanne was being comforted by family members at Sunrise of Plano, TX. At the time of her passing, she was 91 years old.
Jeanne was born February 14, 1925 in St. Albans, WV, to James and Georgia Slater. She attended the University of Illinois, where she earned a degree in education. While there, she was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. Jeanne also met and married her college sweetheart, William B. Huelsen in 1945. Together they raised two daughters.
Jeanne taught school for seventeen years as a 4th grade teacher at Woodland Intermediate School in Gages Lake, IL. She was a beloved teacher, and children were her passion. She was among the elite 5% of our nation’s teachers to be listed in the Who’s Who in American Teachers in the 1992 volume. After retirement, Jeanne and her husband moved to Texas where they built their house on Cedar Creek Lake. To occupy Jeanne’s time, she became involved in causes near and dear to her. She was an avid animal rights and children’s rights advocate, and she also volunteered her time at the East Texas Medical Center in Athens, TX.
Jeanne would not want to be remembered for just tallies of achievements, occupation, or affiliations. With that being said, her family is bidding farewell to some idiosyncrasies that made Jeanne, Jeanne. She was renown for not holding back her opinion and had a knack for telling it like it is. Jeanne could give as good as she took and was often considered “feisty.” She had a love of driving fast, reading, cross word puzzles, taunting her husband, shopping, and chocolate. All who loved her dearly will never forget her tenacity, wit, charm, and undying love for them.
Jeanne was preceded in death by: William B. Huelsen (husband) and countless beloved pets. She is survived by children, Anne Huelsen McCalpin and her husband Larry McCalpin of Frisco, TX, and Janet Huelsen Abri and her husband Anthony Abri of Schaumburg, Il; grandchildren Jason McCalpin and his wife Allison McDonald, Kasey McCalpin Addison; and her husband Vaughn Addison, and Christopher Abri. great-grandchildren Cameron and Garrett Addison, and Owen and Molly McCalpin; and brother Jack Bryan of St. Albans, WV.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, Friday March 25th at Ted Dickey Funeral Home on 18th street in Plano, TX. Memorial gifts may be made in Jeanne’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association of Dallas, http://www.alz.org/join_the_cause_donate.asp
