Beloved husband of Carolyn and father of Joan (Paul) Havala and Andy (Deanna), grandfather of 5 (Joan-3 and Andy-2), and great-grandfather of 4.
John was born and raised in Lansing/East Lansing, MI and was a graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in Engineering and a graduate of the Naval ROTC program. He was a proud officer in the United States Navy and volunteered for service in the Vietnam War aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga after declining an offer to be a Naval flight instructor state-side. After his service, John lived with his family in Northville, MI and worked as an engineer for Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, MI for 35 years until retirement.
His love for boating and need to be on open water continued throughout his life as an owner of many seaworthy vessels, many of which he proudly helmed on the waters of Lake Erie, providing many years of enjoyment for his family and friends. This passion continued into retirement with John obtaining his Captain’s license and chartering cruises in the Napa/San Francisco and San Diego areas of California.
After leaving California, John and Carolyn continued their retirement in the Dallas area of Texas, enjoying their close proximity to daughter Joan and her family.
John passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2024 after being hospitalized for a short period of time, vigilantly surrounded by his loving wife Carolyn and children Joan and Andy.
John’s love, loyalty, honesty, strength, knowledge and humor will be truly missed in this world. To know him wasn’t to love him, but to love him was to know him.
