J. D. was born on June 19, 1943, in Mill Hall, Pa., to Nadine Ludlow Washburn and J. John Washburn. He graduated high school in Saxonburg, Pa. in May 1961 and enlisted into the U.S. Army the very next day. His service and tour of duty took him to Germany in 1962, where he met Karin Fischer and married in July 1963. For the next 20 + years his Duty Stations took him and the family throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Upon his retirement as Sgt First Class in 1981, the family settled in Plano, Texas.
Not content with sitting idle, J.D. entered the Dallas County Sheriff's Academy in 1985, where he earned the nickname, "Old Sarge", because he was one of the few older candidates to graduate. He enjoyed his service with the Dallas Sheriff's Dept until his second retirement in 2005.
POP to the family, had many talents- he loved tinkering with cars, loved animals, was Mr. Fix It for anyone that needed help. His greatest joy was his family. He was the father to Sabine Rowell, John Washburn, Jr., & Daryl Washburn. Grandfather to Michael Washburn, Rachel Washburn, D.J. Washburn, John Washburn, Jennifer Rowell, Jamie Pallett. Great- Grandfather to Jordan Davis and wife Madyson, Justin Davi and wife Cori, Rylie Pallett and Skiler Pallett, and great-grandfather to Millie Mae Davis.
