Mary Patricia Hunchik (nee O’Boyle), was born to Breda and the late John O’Boyle, in Ottawa, Ontario, on November 20, 1962. She was immersed in the Catholic Faith and would carry those values of selflessness and charity to others throughout her life. The O’Boyles moved to Oakville, Ontario in 1970. She attended Notre Dame Academy and then completed grade 13 at Blakelock High School in Oakville where she met David Hunchik, the love of her life and father to her children.
Mary’s love for children coupled with creativity and a bubbly personality made her a natural camp counsellor and later an accomplished pediatric nurse. She worked for the Oakville Parks and Rec. Department and sang, crafted, danced and joyfully lead children through many adventurous summers during her teenage years. Mary graduated from the Ryerson College of Nursing and accepted her first nursing job at Toronto Sick Children’s Hospital. She married her loving husband, Dave, in August 1986. Eric, the first of their two sons, was born to the happy couple on March 1, 1991.
Mary was recruited by the Dallas Children’s Hospital to shore up their newly established pediatric dialysis ward. Always up for an adventure, Mary, Dave and their son, Eric made the trek south and landed in Richardson, Texas in 1992. On March 19, 1997, they welcomed Carter into their lives to complete their family unit. She raised her two beautiful boys with patience and humour and filled their home with raucous play and laughter.
Mary was dedicated to her career as a pediatric peritoneal dialysis nurse. She was devoted to her patients and enjoyed educating and supporting their families. Mary knew first hand the struggle of kidney disease being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 18. She was determined to live life to the fullest.
Always charming, vibrant and fun-loving, Mary was loved immensely by her nieces and nephews, Helen and Jack Hunchik, the entire Hunchik family, her extended family in Canada and Ireland and the Ukrainian community in Texas.
Mary is survived by her husband David; sons Eric and Carter and his fiancee Nadine Fiege; Mary's mother, Breda; her brothers, John-Eddy and Tommy; and sister Bridget. She is predeceased by her father, John O'Boyle and brother Marty.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Mary's name to the National Kidney Foundation, the American Diabetes Association or the Canadian Diabetes Association. The family would appreciate receiving a notification of your donation at [email protected].
Mary will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
