He graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Psychology. After graduating, he went on to serve a mission in Mexico and continued to faithfully serve within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Newell married Barbara Jean Taylor on September 2, 1972, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The family was later sealed in the Dallas, Texas Temple. After marrying Barbara, they lived in Salt Lake City and then moved to Orem, Utah. Later, Newell’s career led them to relocate to Garland, Texas. During their 50 years of marriage, they were blessed with three children, Sam, Emily, and Michelle.
Newell’s main focus in life was his devotion to his family as well as a deep passion for music. This passion led him to become a self taught musician, learning to play the guitar, piano, pedal steel, and many other instruments. These talents allowed him the opportunity to play in many many rock and country bands throughout his life. In addition, this passion led him to a career in the music industry for over 50 years. During his career, he was a representative working with many of the top piano and keyboard lines.
Newell is known for his unconditional love and dedication to his family and friends. In both his personal and professional life, his generosity, kindness, and patience knew no limits. These qualities, along with his love for music, led him to develop a hobby of teaching guitar to his children, grandchildren, and others. He enjoyed reading, nature and outdoor activities. But above all, spending time with his family was his greatest joy.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Miriam, his brother, Philip, his birth mother, Marilyn, and his parents, Frank and Norma.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, his children, Sam (Raechal) Hardy, Emily (Dusty) Heath, and Michelle Hardy; and his eight grandchildren. Also, two brothers, Paul (Lisa) Hardy, John (Lona) Hardy, and his sister Elizabeth (Chris) Derrick.
Thank you, my Honey, for an exemplary life of selfless love and family devotion. You always demonstrated never ending love, never uttered an unkind word no matter the hardships. I love you deeply.
