Richard Arthur Lerma, a proud veteran, devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2025, surrounded by family who adored him beyond measure. He lived a life defined by honor, compassion, and faith—a man who believed deeply in service to others and never hesitated to lend a helping hand or a warm smile.
Born on April 23, 1944, Richard answered his country’s call in 1964 when he enlisted in the United States Navy. His service carried him through over two decades of dedication and sacrifice, including two tours in Vietnam. He served aboard the USS Cimarron in the Gulf of Tonkin and later with SEAL Team 119, where his courage, leadership, and loyalty to his fellow servicemen shone brightly.
Throughout his distinguished career, he earned multiple commendations for excellence and bravery, including the National Defense Service Medal, 20-Year Good Conduct Medal, Navy Sharpshooter Ribbon (with “E”), Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation, along with numerous other unit and service ribbons. He retired in 1986 at the rank of Chief Petty Officer, carrying with him the deep respect of all who had the privilege of serving beside him.
After his military retirement, Richard continued to live a life of service and integrity through his civilian career. He worked with the Los Angeles Police Department and later for the Department of Homeland Security, upholding the same unwavering values of honor, responsibility, and compassion that had guided him throughout his military life.
In 1978, Richard married the love of his life, Wanda Lerma, beginning a partnership rooted in love, laughter, and faith. Together, they raised two children, Dayna and Nathaniel Lerma, by 1983, and later welcomed two beautiful granddaughters, Elly and Olivia, by 2014. His family was his greatest joy, and he poured every ounce of his heart into loving and protecting them.
Richard was known for his boundless generosity and his ability to make everyone feel seen and valued. He loved people, his country, and his God with equal devotion. His heart was open, his faith unshakable, and his smile—so warm and genuine—could light up any room. Those who knew him will remember his strength, his humor, and his unwavering kindness.
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 47 years, Wanda Lerma; his children, Dayna and Nathaniel; and his beloved granddaughters, Elly and Olivia. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed, but his legacy of faith, service, and love will live forever in the hearts of those he touched.
Services have been scheduled for Saturday, October 25, 2025 at 12:00PM at the Ted Dickey Funeral Home.
