Sally Vachon Magnuson

Sally was born in Worchester, Massachusetts on January 20, 1942, and her family moved to Cape Cod to run Dunscroft By The Sea, a Bed and Breakfast in Harwich Port. After she graduated from the Academy of Notre Dame Tyngsboro she began working for Amica Mutual Insurance Company in Boston where she met Kenneth Magnuson. They dated and then married on May 22, 1965, moved to Tonawanda, New York, and started their family. They relocated from New York to Plano, Texas, in 1970. Over the next five decades, she watched a small town grow into a bustling city and dedicated her life to shaping that growth through leadership, grace, and relentless advocacy.

Champion for Plano City Government

Sally’s passion for her adopted hometown led her to public office. She was elected to the Plano City Council (Place 4), where she served with distinction for three terms totaling seven years. Bound by term limits but never limited in her vision, she championed sustainable infrastructure, public safety, and community arts. Her leadership extended beyond city lines as she represented Plano at the National League of Cities and the North Texas Council of Governments, advocating for regional progress.

A Lifetime of Civic Devotion

Sally believed that a city’s heart is found in its volunteer organizations. Her civic footprint in Collin County was massive:

• Education & Literacy: Served six years on the Plano Library Board of Trustees, including two years as Chair.

• Community Leadership: Graduated from and served on the executive board for Leadership Plano, mentoring generations of future leaders.

• Advocacy & Support: Held crucial leadership roles with the Collin County Women’s Shelter (now Hope’s Door), and served on advisory boards for CASA of Collin County and the Rape Crisis Center, protecting the area's most vulnerable.

• Arts & Culture: Brought joy to the community as President of Live From Plano for three years and through her steadfast support of the Plano Symphony Orchestra.

Family and Legacy

Above all her professional accomplishments, Sally's greatest love was her family. Nothing brought more joy to her life than spending precious time with them, celebrating their milestones, and attending the marriages and births of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her strength, guidance, and unconditional love will be forever cherished.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Kenneth Magnuson, as well as her parents, Raymond and Dorothy Vachon, her brother Bruce Vachon, and her nephew Jamison Hinton.

She is survived by her loving family: son, Bruce Magnuson and his wife Casey; and daughter, Kristen Rasor and her husband Allen; grandsons, Kenneth Magnuson and his wife June, Grayson Magnuson and his wife Catherine, and granddaughter, Brooke McGehee and her husband Taylor; and her great-grandchildren: Julian Magnuson and Lila McGehee. She is also survived by her sister Annemarie Hinton and her husband Dennis, her nieces Jordan Hinton and Alexa Vachon, and nephew Wolfgang Vachon.

Sally's impact lives on in the parks, libraries, and community centers of Plano, and in the hearts of the generations she leaves behind. She will be remembered as a visionary leader, a compassionate neighbor, and a devoted matriarch.
