My professor back in ‘83, my mentor throughout the years. You made a difference to us Dr. Sam.

Dr. Sam was a very unique educator.  At the graduation reception from SHSU (MSCJ) in 2011, he sat with me and my wife for more than 20 minutes.  He was kind and patient.  I am saddened by his loss as are the hundreds upon hundreds of students to have had the opportunity to learn from him as he was always willing to share his vast knowledge.

Dr. Souryal was a fantastic professor.  I took him for Seminar in Administration and Organization and loved it.  He was in his 70s and had more energy than most of the doctoral students.  He also had our class over to his house - which was very kind and collegial.  I enjoyed hearing some of his policing stories from Egypt and felt he added quite a bit to SHSU.  He lived a long, fulfilling life and will be missed by many of his former students and faculty.  You can't really ask for much more than that.  My sincere condolences go out to all of his close family members.

With great sorrow I heard that Dr Sam Souryal passed away. I worked with this man closely, he was a unique and genuine scholar. I would like to send my condolences to his colleagues at SHSU and his family. May God rest his soul.

Dr Souryal was my professor, mentor, and friend.  A brilliant academic and a wonderful person.  The last time I saw Sam was at ACJS a number of years ago.  We talked while sitting in the hotel bar; I ordered a Sam Adams beer and he followed suit.  As the beer and conversation came to an end he said let's always meet and drink a Sam Adams at every conference.  We never did; something I much regret. Thank you Dr Souryal for your friendship and knowledge.  You are missed.

Sam was one of a kind. He was an unforgettable colleague who made a lasting impression on generations of CJ Bearkats. Although his life has ended, his legacy and impact will go on--proof he was larger than life.

Dr. Souryal was my professor when I was a Ph.D. student at Sam Houston in the early 1990s. He was my friend and colleague when I returned to SHSU in the mid 2000s as a professor. My deepest condolences for your loss. Dr. Souryal was a scholar and a professor. He contributed greatly to the success of the of College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston.

There are some educators who make impressions on you with their knowledge, teaching styles, and story telling. Dr. Sam Souryal was one of those to me while I was working on my Masters at SHSU. Often just before providing an example or telling a story he would say, "come fly with me," which meant to me listen with an open mind. Dr. Souryal was a former police officer in Egypt and shared with me outside of class experiences he had while on the force and the tough decisions he unfortunately had to make. And for me, Dr. Souryal being a former practitioner, gave his ability to teach and share with his students with even more credibility. He, along with several others at the university, inspired me to begin teaching at SHSU as well. 
Rest in peace sir. You will be missed.
