Mom's letter to Dad's Memorial Book

This is in memory of my loving husband. I am writing this so other people will know how much I LOVE you. I remember back in 1955 it was in March when I first met you and I will never forget that day, when you and your sister came across the yard to talk to my brother about work. Oh boy! That day was a blessing to me! God knew just who could put up with me and you were the one. I thank God for the most precious man in the whole world. We got marry on April 3, 1956 and every day after that until January 18, 2013 I enjoyed waking up and you always saying you sure are pretty today.

I was the weak one, you was the strong one. Thank God he gave us three beautiful children: Kathy, our little July fly, David our June bug and Laura our snowflake. That's what you said when you saw each one of them. Some people say they love this one today and that one tomorrow, but my love for you will always be the same as the day I met you, forever and always. You always said at night—good night, baby. And your last words to me were good night baby and I love you, more than you will ever know and don't you forget it. I never will—always yours—your wife Emogene Overcast.

When I think of Brother Overcast, I think of the following; faithful, long-suffering, pleasant, kind, courteous, loyal, friend and brother. I had the privilege of knowing Brother Overcast for many years. I have known him to be very faithful to his God, his church, his wife and to his entire family. He was faithful right up to the very end of his life here on earth. he was very proud of his family, but was a real man in the eyes of God. Many times he found  himself in the valleys of this life, but he never lost the faith. He didn't lose the battle; he won the reward of Heaven. He would tell us all, hold on; it will be worth it all.

Brother Overcast was a true Christian, always faithful to the Lord. Everyone knew him to be a loving husband, and one of the greatest fathers and grandfathers. He was friends to everyone and was a great friend to our family for many years. Jesus knows just who to put in your life to encourage you, when you need it. Thank God for Brother Overcast because he was a real friend and a real man of God. The Full Gospel Tabernacle of Plant City was so blessed to have him as a member and to have him serve as a member of the Board of Directors. He was ready to serve in any capacity, that I needed him for many years. This was a few years back, but Full Gospel Tabernacle still claimed him, and we just loaned him out to Brother Taylor's church. The song: I have a feeling everything is going to be allright was true way back when the car fell on him, and even today. I say to Sister Overcast: "Everything is going to be alright." To all the Overcast family: "My prayers are going up daily for you, and everyone sends their love and prayers from the Full Gospel Tabernacle of Plant City.

To Papa:
I never had a daddy, but, Papa, you and Uncle Chuck showed me how a daddy is supposed to be. Thank you for all the things you did for this family. Papa, you will be forever remembered and always loved.

I want to start by letting everyone know that my Papa was the best man I've ever known. He was everything a man should be and I would give anything to be half as great as he was in my eyes. I only recently in the last few years started to understand the way he was. I can remember times with my Papa as far back as him picking us up from Tampa and buying us a snack cake and coke at the little bakery off the interstate and I even can recall the first time we spent the night at Granny and Papa's house, but all the yearts I spent living with Papa I never really understood just how great a man he was. I have many regrets; but, by far my biggest is not being there with him through all this. He was there for me every time I needed him as a kid and as a man. I know without a doubt that me being alive today is a result of Granny and Papa's prayers and I thank God for them both. We all know that if ever there was a man in Heaven, it is going to be Papa Overcast and thank Jesus because that means everyone alive still has a chance to see and be with Papa again. I was blessed by having Papa in my life and my son may be small; but, I know that Papa was a big part of his life. I will do my best from this time forward to be the role-model to Luis that Papa was to me. I thank  God for giving me the times I did have with him and all the good memories that I will hold in my heart to share with my son and all my nieces and nephew. I love  you, Granny and wish I was there with you.

I met Brother Overcast about twenty years ago and I'll never forget teasing him about "that woman" of his life and where die he find her. He said "I ran out of gas one night and it was the last house on the street. I knocked on the door and there she was and it was the only choice I had."

No, seriously, I never met a more sincere, more dedicated man. He was a man who never put emphasis on things that weren't real. He was no phony. He was the most real Christian man I ever met. If this is limited to ten words or so that would be "Iloved him with all my heart. If I had a best friend, it would have been him."

Sister Overcast and Laura, I wanted to let you know that I am so sorry for your loss and will be praying for you and your family. Brother Overcast was always very sweet to me and I know that He is in Glory with our Savior. I pray that the Lord wraps His arms around you and gives you the strength, peace and comfort to get through the next days, weeks, months and years to come until you see him again in glory. I love you Pops. You have always been there for me through all these years. Out of the 24 years that I have had the priveledge to know you and your family, I cannot recall you ever saying anything negative or harsh about anyone. You are the greatest man I have ever known and I am proud that you recognized me as one of your daughters. We will have a void in our hearts but we know that you are with Jesus right now where we long to be. I am envious of you and wish I was there right now with you but one day I will see you again.
