This most gentle of men was born in Port Glasgow Scotland on March 13, 1936 to Alexander and Isabella (nee McMillan) Conner. Like many young men coming of age in the 1950's he secured a diploma in engineering and set out to conquer the world.
His first passport was issued just months after his 16th birthday and listed his profession as "radio officer". He put that passport to use a month later with his first stamp entering Dieppe France - that first journey sparked a lifelong love of exploring the world and a hunger for knowledge of current events around the world.
The day after his 22nd birthday a stamp reads - immigrant landed immigrant recu - Montreal. This day forever split his heart between Canada and Scotland.
He came to work for the US government on the Dew Line and in Greenland, and his time in Greenland and many trips to Denmark cemented his love for all things Danish. He continued to travel the world in his time off and came to love his new home base in Montreal.
In 1971 he fell in love with his beloved Mary (nee Tobin) and they had almost 50 wonderful years of travel, entertaining friends and family and hotly debating the news of the day. There has not been a day since we lost her in 2020 that he didn't miss the light of his life. Alistair became an exceptional cook and always had a sense style, no one would dispute he was the best dressed man in any room.
Settling down with Mary, his career turned to local work. He spent many years proudly working for CFCF and CJAD -working on the transmission towers, doing his part to keep the news on the air.
Alistair now joins his brother Jack, who we lost in 2022, in a better place. With them, Jack's beloved Sheila, brother's -in-law Gerald Tobin, Ted Tobin, Tom White, Cal Randell, Jim Callaghan, and George Seviour and sisters-in-law Dorothy (nee Tobin) White, and Isabelle (nee Tobin) Randell (October 9,2024). He is survived by his dearest nephews Gary and Alistair Conner and their families, sisters-in law Rita Callaghan, Patricia Stanley (Fraser), Alice Seviour, Jacinta Doyle (Mike) and Marian Szarkowicz(Ken) and the many Tobin nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
The family sends their deepest gratitude to Lakeshore General Hospital for their compassionate care of both Mary and Alistair; to the entire team at Catherine Booth Hospital for helping Alistair recover to enjoy his final year; to the staff at Le Wellesley for creating a safe and caring home and his care givers Katherine Knight and Karine Saba for their tender care. To dear friends Gunnar Sprauer and Penny Pennell for always being there when we couldn't, you are forever part of our families.
A joint celebration of life for Alistair and Mary will be held on November 9,2024 from 1-4pm at the Forest and Stream Club, 1800 Chemin Bord du Lac, Dorval.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Alistair's memory can be made to Lakeshore General Hospital, PBS Vermont, or the Scottish Wildlife Trust (specifically for Moss Glen Reserve, Kilmacolm).
