It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our mom Janet Edgerly, at the West Island Manor on June 12th in her 99th year. Dear mother of Peter Edgerly (Helen), Heather Edgerly Swant (Glen) and Diane van der Pol (Balthasar). Treasured Nana to Morgan (Kailey), Melayne (Brent) and Christian (Jennifer). Great grandmother to Chanelle, Macrae, Chloe and Theo. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 48 years, Gerry (1995), her dear grandson, Nicholas van der Pol (2003), her parents, J. Harold & Edith Alexander, and her siblings Margot Grossmith and John Alexander.
Mom was born and raised in Montreal West. She graduated very proudly from McGill University in 1945 with a BSc. Honours, Magna Cum Laude in Biochemistry. She worked at the Royal Victoria Hospital, and in other Montreal hospitals, putting her degree to good use in research. She was a stay at home mom for years until returning to work in the Science Labs at Lindsay Place High School, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Mom and Dad married in 1947 and raised their 3 children in Pointe Claire and Beaconsfield, Quebec. The family spent many happy years sailing and in the winter skiing at Gray Rocks, St. Jovite/Mont Tremblant. A number of summer family vacations were spent exploring areas across Canada. She felt it important that we all know our own ‘Special’ country first.
Mom was an avid reader, keen bridge player, talented knitter and was always interested in trying new crafts. She cherished her annual ski week trips with girlfriends every winter. Mom was always involved in weekly social activities over the years: tennis, swimming, biking and bowling, to mention a few. She took up golf and continued playing throughout her retirement. Mom and Dad travelled to Europe, took yearly holidays to the Caribbean and explored Alaska, Newfoundland and many other areas in their VW camper. They enjoyed winters in Bonita Springs/Naples, Florida and summers in Sutton West, Ontario in their later years.
Mom moved back to Pointe Claire, Que. after Dad passed and was wonderfully supported by Peter and Helen. She continued to spend many winters down south. When this was no longer possible, she moved to the Cambridge where she enjoyed living for several years. She was then moved to the CHSLD West Island Manor as her Dementia became advanced.
The family would like to thank very much the staff at the West Island Manor, and previously the Cambridge for their dedicated continual care and compassion over the years. Mom survived COVID and remained cheerful until the end.
As per mom’s wishes, a private family service and interment will take place in Toronto, where mom will be laid to rest beside Dad.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to Dans la rue https://danslarue.org/en/donations/ or West Island Mission http://www.wimmoi.org/how-you-can-help/ would be greatly appreciated by the family
