I have just learned of Roman's passing and am sad not to have had the chance to honour him at the time.  Roman was a friend, colleague, intellectual  provocateur, and fine dinner companion.
An era is over.

I am saddened to learn of Roman's passing.  I wanted to see if he was on facebook, but got the shock of his death notice instead.  My ex-wife Francesca and I met Roman and Sandy in the Adirondacks 30 years ago and became fast friends.  The two were a dynamic duo in the kitchen making fresh pasta and bananas flambe (sic) for a truly decadent waffle and ice cream dessert.  They broke the mold when he was minted.  My sincere condolences to Sandy and Michael and the rest of the family.

Bye Mr.J. I met him when I was an exchange student in 2000. A great teacher! I have gorgeous memories of him! R.I.P.

It's been nearly 18 years since I walked into Mr. Jarymowycz's classroom for the first time as an exchange student from Germany. All around the walls it was decorated with pictures of mostly German tanks and having inherited the German sense of guilt and my parent's anti - militarism, I did not feel comfortable at first. But with his warm sense of humour he made us (there were three more exchange students from different countries at that time) feel welcome right away - not only in his classroom, but also in his heart and he and his wife even invited us in their home and prepared a meal with one course from each country we came from.
Besides world history he taught me how to study by taking notes - an ability that helped me through med school - and by passing on newspaper articles from the Canadian and American press about the 10th anniversary of the German reunification I - the 17-year-old greenhorn -understood for the first time the significance of this piece of “German” history.

Mrs J, I was shocked and saddened to hear of Mr J's passing. The number of students he had a profound influence on must be in the thousands, myself included. I remember him encouraging me to do things in the world of debating/UN/student government that I'd have never done otherwise; twenty years later I owe so much in my own life/career to this 'start'. He drove us students not only to succeed but literally if necessary, when we needed to get to debating tournaments as far as downtown. Will never forget him reciting Tennyson, cartooning for BUX, being a pioneer of laptop use in teaching (including to play Harry Connick's Christmas CD while we worked), and most of all those classes where he'd act out history in a 50-minute one-man show (I can only assume his Napoleon impersonation was spot-on). Hilarious and intelligent, he definitely contributed more than he took. Time on this planet well spent I'd say. My condolences.

Dear Sandy,

So many familiar names, so many memories of good days at St. T. Roman certainly touched many lives with his  love of history and unique  talents . There was never a dull day in the staff room when Roman was around....he was  either planning the next  model parliament, enjoying some good  natured political debate  or dashing off to the rugby field. Always dapper in tie, pocket hankerchief  and blazer.....he  definitely added the essence of GQ  to our hallowed halls.  Sincere condolences to you and Michael.   

Sandy, We were so sad to hear the news of Roman's passing. He was a cherished friend of the Routley family and as so many entries in this book can attest, he was loved and admired by his students and by everyone associated with him in his military life. 
I particularly enjoyed the opportunities to converse with him at Hussars events and to hear what he would have to say about virtually any (and every) subject. During the years that I was away my parents would frequently send me the latest quotes from Roman, but they could not adequately reproduce his amazing range of delivery styles. His contributions to the Regiment are legendary and greatly respected. 
We meet people in life who are unforgettable and Roman was truly such a person. Please accept our most sincere condolences and shared sense of loss. We have all benefitted from his knowledge, wisdom, wit and friendship.

I met Roman in the early 1960's when we were students  at Cardinal Newman High School in Montreal. Even then he was a most remarkable and very talented individual. It took me a few days from first reading his obituary to writing this because I had to reminisce and mourn in my own way. I remember going to his home and seeing some WWII battles recreated with model soldiers on an accurate scale of 1to so many. I recall with amusement his cartoon creation, Wonder Wart Hog. I have memories of many other things he was involved in. There was never a dull moment when you sat next to Roman.

Dear Jarymowycz Family, I had the privilege of working with "Dr.J" during many visit to Northern France with the Canadian Forces College.  He was a fascinating man and I always found myself listening to him when he briefed the students in the middle of a battlefield.  May he rest in peace.  Thoughts and prayers to family and friends.

He was a man of many parts.  I first met him in high school when he was coaching rugby and debating at St. Thomas, fierce rivals. Later on I met him through the Army.  He always intelligent, dynamic, entertaining and involved.  All in all, an extraordinary guy who will be sorely missed.

I am very grateful to have had Mr. Jarymoycz as a teacher in my early teens as he shaped the person I am today. His class awakened my love of history, pointing me towards a Liberal Arts education and then history at McGill. I remember his great sense of humour and creativity (especially the amazing cartoons) and the way every class was different, drawing upon military history, poetry, public speaking, politics and art. The variety of approaches made you think big, look for connections. I was excited to attend every day and wound up joining many of his after-school clubs. Many of the things I learned remain with me today. I am sad not to have had the opportunity to see him again in adulthood for a good chat. His was most definitely a life well-led. My sincere sympathies to his family and loved ones. 

I had the honour of having served with LCol Jarymowycz in the Royal Canadian Hussars. Initially as my OC of A squadron and then as the Commanding Officer of the regiment.
He was all you could ask of a commander. Intelligent, colourful, inspiring and most of all respected! Rest in peace good Sir!

It's hard to put into words the impact Dr. J had on my life - as a teacher, a debate coach and as a mentor. His passion for history and his students, his wicked sense of humour and ability to bring out the best of us will always be admired and remembered. The hours of time that he spent with the debate team- reviewing our cases, coaching our presentations and essentially shaping our public speaking skills (which in my later life are essential to my career), he truly was dedicated and a great example of the type of teacher you hope to come across at least once in your life.

I didn't always like Roman Jarymowycz, but he had a profound impact on my life. The many hours I spent in his class and company helped shape the direction my later studies and life would take. He taught me how to debate, which I continued to compete in through out my university years, and led to me meeting my wife and our family. Big stuff. Thanks. "For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeters, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a triumphal chariot (and) A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting."

I had Mr. Jarymowycz for History class all three years that I attended St. Thomas High School (class of 75). Although there were many good teachers at St. T., he was my favourite. He never failed to make his classes interesting, entertaining (he did a great German accent) and educational. It was evident he had a true passion for the things he was trying to pass on to his students. My sincere condolences to his family and friends whom I certain are going to miss him dearly. R.I.P., sir. 

First, my condolences to Sandra and the family on your terrible loss.     I first met Roman when I was a young impressionable Officer-Cadet at CMR while he was the CO of the Hussars in the early 80s. He made a huge impression on me as a larger than life figure. I then had the great opportunity to meet Roman while I was on Staff at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto. I was responsible for the European Field Study Exercise and was looking for a knowledgeable expert. Terry Copp pointed me towards Roman and we hired him immediately to create the study package and then act as subject matter expert on the FSE on the battlefields of Europe. Roman transformed the academic portion and brought it to life. His lectures and guided tours in Europe were legendary and still talked about to this day. I personally spent many hours with Roman breaking bread ansd drinking fine wine in all of the best spots of Europe. It is an honour to consider him a friend and he will be truly missed. I have included some photos of Roman in Europe, in the place he loved.

For me as a young Trooper in the Hussars, Roman was the spark that ignited my life long fascination with the Armored Corps and Military History.  

He will be missed..........

 I always found his class interesting and he ignited an interest in history for me. It has broadened my view of the world. He also inspired me by his service and his cartoons. I have googled him a few times and hoped to contact him and let him know. He was good to the student classes of 1977 and 1978. At St Thomas.

In June of 1981, Mr. Jarymowycz (I would never use his given name) gave me a book of Beatles lyrics. On the inside cover he wrote a message that describes his life, as much as it was a wish for mine. 

“If you play at life with all the zeal, enthusiasm and courage you play at rugby –
Then you shall dazzle the stars and hook away planets using galaxies as props.”

Dear Sir: 

You were the star that we all wished to dazzle
The planet that that supported our hearts
The sun at the centre of our galaxy

After graduation, I had the pleasure of being his neighbour in Beaconsfield, where we would often run into each other, and share a laugh!

I was saddened to learn about the sudden passing of Roman and your loss.
I have very fond memories of Roman as a charming colleague and  dynamic teacher when we taught at St Thomas in the seventies. I can still hear his palpable dramatization of Tennyson's narrative poem "Charge of the Light Brigade"- that vibrated through our adjacent classrooms.  He filled our staffroom with much laughter and humour.

He had an enormous impact on me, both in terms of my academics and in how to behave as a gentleman.  I joined the Royal Canadian Hussars Regiment in large part because of his involvement and I am a better man for having done so. Dear Sandy and family,

I am thinking of you during this difficult time.  You and Roman played a vital role in my life and your combined influence continues to this day.
Roman was a mentor to me in many guises that changed over time.  He was my rugby coach and then we coached together at St. T years later.  Roman was my CO with the RCH and there were many funny episodes from that time.  I have talked about my former  Lt. Col. in history class many, many times.  
You both took me under your wing as a stumbling student-teacher at St. T, which included bringing me back to your home for meals, drinks and comaraderie. I will be forever appreciative of your kindness and generosity.
Your warm hospitality continued when you had many of us over for dinner and consolation after the service of our friend Butch Orr years ago.  Even then, Roman was attentive, listening and giving me advice that I am still mindful of - especially now that I teach Indigenous Studies and History.
You have each left an indelible mark on me as a person and as an educator.  Saying "thank you" is inadequate, but I will repeat that what you each taught and shared with me comes through daily in my teaching.
I cannot make it to Roman's service due to family commitments, but please know you are in my heart and thoughts.

We grieve the loss of a good friend, a great mind, an engaging raconteur, a perceptive artist.
We remember the earlier heady days at St Thomas H.S., including the October Crisis when Roman was called up to serve and missed a week of classes.  Jumping ahead 15-20 years, we have always valued the positive roles that Sandy and Roman played in the development of our two sons at St.T., one in the math classroom, the other on the rugby field and war games club.
We cherish the friendship of our families highlighted by the annual enactment of arcane D&D scenarios on the feast of St. Stephen, accompanied by some “Orfly good” port and risotto, with the participation of one or more of the three sons who were in town at the time.
We were touched by your recent visit to see us here on PEI.
Roman’s spirit remains with us.  As the poet wrote:
“Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there; I do not sleep.”


My condolences to Mr Jarymowycz's family. I had him as a history teacher and was in part of the first model parliament that was held at St Thomas, a tradition that my daughter participated in a few years ago at St Thomas. Even though he was just starting out, I think he was the best teacher I ever had. He made learning fun, gave me a life-long love of history and I always looked forward to his classes. It was my distinct pleasure to have the opportunity to be his vice principal at St Thomas High School where I would take all opportunity to visit his classes during his Canadian History sessions. As a lover of our history it was marvellous to see Roman capture the interest of the students and move them through the phases of his courses. Of  course his after school sessions with the students as they participated in the debates or military discussions or rehearsal for the parliamentary week, all became the hallmark of a remarkable person. Sandy, my most profound sympathy goes to you and the rest of the family  in knowing that Roman's works will live on.  , .

Mr. Jarymowycz was my home room and literature teacher for three months in grade 8 as I moved from the province in January of that grade (1980). He was well known to me and my family prior to this, through my older brother, Dave's, involvement in the debate club headed up by Mr. Jarymowycz as we watched debates and the coaching given. I remember him as a professional, intellectual, no nonsense instructor with a wealth of knowledge and experience that I wanted to feed off. He was also very kind to me and had a "Moving Away" party in the class despite me only being in his class for three months. May loving memories bring you peace, comfort, and strength.

Lieutenant-Colonel Jarymowycz was one of the most influential people in my life. He made history come alive in class but he himself was the greatest lesson. Teacher, warrior, intellectual, cartoonist, historian, dungeon-master, storyteller and more, he showed we do not have to be anything ONE thing.

On a personal level, he taught this nerd to publicly embrace D&D, war-gaming, and other geekery not as "loser" activities to be kept from others but rich, creative celebrations. Through his coaching of the debate team I learned the mind is a muscle, both in its strength and its need for exercise. And as my idol and friend, I stole much of what passes as my "charm" from him.

We don't have to choose between being "professional" and being entertaining. In fact, being both makes you - and those around you - better for it.

He will live on not only in the lessons he taught and the stories he told. Truly; I still love sharing his tales with friends and family, old and new. There's the one about accidentally stumbling into the Queen Mum (and her security detail!) in the hunt for a washroom. Or the one about retreating the tank he commanded across the fields of Eastern Europe, chased by a scythe wielding babushka. And so many more adventures, battles, dialogues, and songs.

Which brings us to the final lesson. If there is an activity, or life change you are considering, if you can, do it. Who knows where you may end up, but you will have a story to tell. And in the telling we all become immortal.

Dear Sandra, So sorry to hear of your loss.  My thoughts are with you.   Mr Jarymowycz's ability to romanticize his passions was very influential; and one of the sources of my love of rugby.  I can almost picture him describing battles or rugby matches, or more accurately the 'characters' involved in either battle or rugby, in such a captivating manner that you could not help but listen attentively. More importantly he taught us the value in behaving like young men if we were to be taken seriously.
He will be missed.

Dear Sandy, I was so saddened to hear of Roman's passing. We first met at Loyola, in 1966. Even then, he was larger than life: always flamboyant, with such self confidence. He encouraged me to join the ROTC, an offer I wish I had taken him up on. We always had mutual respect for each other, and we were pleasantly surprised to see each other again, a few years after graduation, at Saint Thomas. Please accept my sincerest condolences at this very sad time. I'll keep all the good memories I have of the times we got to talk to each other.

He will be missed. He was admired by many as a person, teacher and Officer. 

Graduated from St Thomas High School in 1983 and was very fortunate to have Mr Jarymowycz as my history teacher and rugby coach.  

Mr. Jarymowycz made learning history enjoyable and color full like no other teacher could. I fondly remember the many detailed drawings of the Canadian beaver dawning the RCMP uniform on the blackboard. Great way to start the day!

On the rugby pitch Mr. Jarymowycz tough us all valuable life lessons:  Always persist regardless of adversity, never complain regardless of the strength of the opponents. Always use a defeat to prepare and be better for the next battle. A true Zulu warriors!

I remain very thankful and appreciative of the impact Mr. Jarymowycz  have had on my life.

He was such an influential person in my life. He developed my appreciation and love for history and shaped my idea of how subjects should be taught: with passion, humour and a flair for the dramatic.

What a great teacher he was. Almost 20 years and I still remember his funniest anecdotes and the way he cared about his students, how passionate he was about his history. He was my favourite teacher...Please accept my condolences.

I was a St. Thomas Student in Mr. Jarymowycz's War Games Club (Napoleonic Miniature game), I didn't have a lot of positive in my life, suicidal and on the train tracks I thought how I would not be able to paint miniatures if I was dead and so decided not to die. Near three decades later I am writing on this man's obituary wall to simply say his presence in my life at the time I needed it most helped greatly to get me to 42 and to having a son of my own.

Not much of a memory lane meanderer, I never revisited any of my schools and mostly walked away from my past but when I do think about St. Thomas, Mr. Jarymowycz always pops into mind.  A little bit crazy, somewhat unpredictable, exceptionally funny, no one could have made High School History THAT entertaining.  Rest in peace, Lieutenant Colonel.  Condolences to his family.

I have many fond memories of Roman. He was my high school history teacher at St. Thomas High in 1973. Through his great story telling and attention to detail he made me excited about history. I remember that he took our class to a soirée at the armoury on Côte des Neiges. We wore elegant clothing and Roman wore his uniform. It was all so formal and as a young student I was very impressed. Many years later I returned to St. Thomas to work as Community Life animator and Roman was still there. How interesting to work with a former teacher. My condolences to the family. He will be missed.

Mr. Jarymowycz was my home room and literature teacher for three months in grade 8 as I moved from the province in January of that grade (1980).  He was well known to me and my family prior to this, through my older brother, Dave's, involvement in the debate club headed up by Mr. Jarymowycz as we watched debates and the coaching given.  I remember him as a professional, intellectual, no nonsense instructor with a wealth of knowledge and experience that I wanted to feed off.  He was also very kind to me and had a "Moving Away" party in the class despite me only being in his class for three months.

I read the obituary with sadness and wanted to share my condolences and fond memories of Mr Jarymowycz. He was my history teacher at St Thomas High School in 1988 and also my debating coach and the organizer of the D&D and war games clubs. His passion for life and entertaining method of instruction made a lasting impression on me and I consider myself very fortunate to have learned from him. I will never forget his sharp wit and the true interest he showed in his students. May he rest in peace. 

I first met Roman in 1976, and he was a massive influance on my military and civilian life. He will be sorely missed

I will always remember our days together in the 70's when we taught together at St.T. Those were really fun days. My thoughts and prayers go out to Sandy at this very sad time.

Very sad to learn of Roman's passing. A true cavalier, historian, and mentor. He positively influenced the careers of countless Army Reserve officers through his long service at the Canadian Command and Army Staff College in Kingston.

I met Roman in 1980 when as a very new OCdt I climbed the many steps up to the Officers' Mess at Cote de Neiges Armoury where my unit 2 RCA shared the premises with the Royal Canadian Hussars of which Roman was the CO. He was impressive then and impressive to the end. We then worked together at the Staff College from 1996 to 2000, when he retired from the military. I had the honour to contribute in a small way to Roman's epic rewrite of the Black Watch of Canada's history where I got to see proof of his skills as a historian.

I received an email from Roman the day of his birthday, not knowing it would be the last. I will miss his friendship greatly. Sincere condolences to Sandy and the rest of the family. Non Nobis Sed Patria.

I have such fond memories of Sandy and Roman ballroom dancing at high school dances at St. Thomas.  And then, as a colleague, he gave me some of the best advice I have ever received.  I've looked up to Roman for as long as I can remember.  He will be sorely missed, but his legacy will live on in his students and in mine (who benefit from the wisdom Roman passed on to me).

My condolences to his family.  I remember Roman from my days at Loyola College.  He always made me laugh. I remember his cartoons for Loyola News especially the one he drew when Governor General Vanier came to open the library.  He will be missed.  You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

We loved you, Roman. Although you scared Mummy when you took over her chateau in Normandy! Francis Pell Dechame, and the Camp Tall Pines, Fort Ticonderoga crew.
