Sarah Doreen (Olney) Brown

January 20, 1940July 30, 2020

Doreen passed away peacefully in the early morning of July 30 at the Royal Victoria Hospital, surrounded by her daughters. Doreen was predeceased by her loving husband of 58 years Tom, who passed away in September, 2019. She leaves to mourn her six daughters and their families: Patricia and Bruce Ghent, Maria and John Michalovic, Audrey, Sarah and Nasir Ahmed, Katherine and Darrel Miller, Sheilagh and Jim Dempsey. Grandchildren Alisha Michalovic (Michael Marak), Emilie Michalovic (Ryan Macdonell), Gwyneth Ghent, Karim Ahmed, Julia Miller, her step-grandchildren Kayla, Kristen and Rianne Dempsey, and her great grandson Oliver Marak. She also leaves to mourn many nieces, nephews, family and friends and her constant four-legged companion Gracie.

Doreen, or Deen as she was called by her family, was born and grew up in Danville, Quebec in the eastern townships. She attended Asbestos Danville Shipton High School and graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1960. Upon graduation, she worked as a surgical nurse in the OR in which she took great pride. Tom and Doreen were married in 1961 and moved to Howick, where they raised their family on Fertile Creek Road. Tom and Doreen were both active members of the Howick community including long standing members of the curling club. They were faithful Catholics and supported the Très Saint Sacrement Parish as well as the Ignatian Centre and Cursillo community. In addition to raising her family, Doreen was an avid volunteer in Meals on Wheels, the WI, and the Barrie Memorial Ladies Auxiliary.

The family would like to thank the Howick Community for their love and support.

To the girls and their families, we extend our deepest sympathy on the loss of your Mom. We missed both your Mom and Dad when they moved from our community but their contributions to the area will always be remembered. I loved helping Lesley Bonnor at the annual BBQ back at their home. Wonderful generous people to be around.
On behalf of the Howick Women's Institute I also extend our sympathy. She was a member of Aubrey-Riverfield branch but when we were together at events it was always a pleasure to catch up on her life and that of her family. RIP Doreen.

Dear Audrey,
So sorry to hear that you have lost your mother. It doesn’t matter how old we are we are never prepared for that.
Please accept my deepest sympathy.

My sincere sympathy to Doreen's family. We studied together at the Ignatian Spirituality Centre almost 30 years ago. Both Doreen and Tom were such generous and kind volunteers at the Centre for many years. I will always remember her soft spoken wisdom and her big heart . She spoke often and lovingly of her family. My prayers are with you all.

My mother Joan went to nursing school with Doreen and they kept in touch all these years. My parents and Tom and Doreen would visit everytime they were in Montreal. Joan is now long in her journey with alzheimers. We are very grateful for your service class of 1960. Rest in peace Doreen, condolences to your family Xoxo
