Something I've learned over the years is how distance does not separate hearts. We've had "the Schad family" away in Florida for about 50 years but I have always been as close to them as if they lived right up the street (like in the "old days".) I felt exactly the same about Edith. Distance didn't matter. When Christy and Terry got married, Terry, Edith, and John immediately became our family....and what a blessing that was! I didn't get to see Edith often but enjoyed every minute when I did. She always made me smile!! I thought of her as a consummate hostess...her cooking and hospitality were out of this world! Edith will be greatly missed but always close in our hearts.

I HAVE HAD THE GOOD FORTUNE OF KNOWING EDITH FOR NEARLY 40 years. AS THE MOTHER OF MY BROTHER-IN-LAW, Terry (and my sister, Chris), Edith was a big part of my life, too.
I HAVE MANY STORIES TO TELL ABOUT MY GOOD TIMES WITH Edith, but two come to mind. Every time I saw Edith we laughed about them.  Both stories have to do with a characteristic that I shared with Edith ....being a "neatnik".
THE FIRST OCCURRED AFTER A BIG PARTY AT MOM's. Edith and I were doing our thing - cleaning up the mess.  We had the kitchen under control, when unbeknownst to us, MOM came into the kitchen to get herself a piece of pie. She took a plate from the cupboard and placed it on the counter. She then took the pie out of the refrigerator and put it on the counter. At that point, something distracted MOM and she left the kitchen leaving both items on the counter. Edith and I only then became aware of these out-of-place items, and simultaneously, she washed and put away the plate while I returned the pie to the refrigerator. MOM came back looking for her pie only to find that the neatnics had nixed her plans. We all laughed and laughed and continued to laugh over the years when we would think about it.
The second story again involves cleaning. For some reason, Edith and I were cleaning MOM's house. We had swept, polished, and shined everything. The next thing we did was turn on the oven to get it ready to bake a casserole. After a short time, Edith and I both started seeing little black filaments floating in the air all over the house. We couldn't figure out what in the world it was. As it turned out, MOM had stored a couple bags of potato chips in the oven and we managed to incinerate them both! At least we didn't burn down the house.
I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THESE AND OTHER ADVENTURES WITH EDITH. I WILL THINK OF HER OFTEN AND WILL REMEMBER HER ALWAYS.

Edith was a wonderful mother-in-law. She was always kind and giving, helping out  whenever she could. She was a wonderful cook and she derived a great deal of satisfaction from creating delicious meals and desserts for her family and friends. Everyone loved Edith. She was a great conversationalist and a very good card player. I enjoyed sitting on the patio with her working crossword puzzles and just talking. She liked to watch the butterflies and listen to the birds. She was always ready to go to Panera for potato soup or to Cheddars for fried shrimp. We had fun going shopping for a new purse, shoes or outfit. Edith was a good listener and a good story-teller. She was always very kind to and complimentary of her entire family.I loved that she and my mom were best of friends until my mom passed away four years ago. I genuinely enjoyed being with Edith and I already miss her a lot. We were all lucky to have her in our lives for so many years. I know that she is at peace now and happily reunited with her loved ones.

Your dear Mother has gracefully touched many people in her life time with inspiration, words of encouragement, thoughtful and genuine care. She always listened with interest, maybe which is what made her a great hair stylist. Her heart and goal was always to make people comfortable, happy and of course never to leave her home without eating some of her wonderful cooking. The ole saying, “If I had known you were coming I would have baked a cake”, well, your Mom always had something either on hand or in the oven when company even showed up unannounced. I know that from the various times I stopped by without calling. 

Chris and Terry, it is always hard to lose your Mother no matter what your age. And I have been in your position, so I have an idea of what you must be going through. The words, it will get easier in time is little to no comfort now – but I have found thinking about all the great memories, good times, adventures, and life lessons taught to be helpful.  And I have wonderful memories of visits and vacation times with both Edith and John. Although she was truly my cousin, Edith always seemed more like an Aunt in my heart. Knowing she is without pain or discomfort eases the loss, she is dearly missed and always will.

I loved talking with your Mom, she always seemed to understand when I had something that was bothering me and helped me work through the situation. And I truly enjoyed our visits when we were able to discuss her activities whether while growing up, working as a hair stylist or the adventures she and John had looking for sea shells after moving to Florida.  She shared stories about my Dad that I will cherish and was able to give me some insight into what made my Dad the way he was. For that I will always love Edith.

Always remember she loved you very much, could not have been more proud of her son and daughter-in-law and was super proud of and full of love for her grandsons. It gave her a lot of joy and happiness when she knew each of you was safe and happy. Her next joyous occasion was when her great-grandson became a large part of her life, what love and joy that brought.

Our love and support will always be here for you and will continue to keep you and the entire family in our prayers and thoughts.
